Richard Dreyfuss recently found a way to draw some big attention to himself: Take to the liberal podium and start bashing President Bush.

It seems the celebrity spotlight-getter works every time it's tried these days.

Since it's been a while since Dreyfuss has landed a role in a major motion picture it's sort of understandable that he would seek publicity. Somehow, though, I don't think Mr. Holland would approve of the actor's unscholarly approach.

Dreyfuss recently made a speech at the same venue where Tim Robbins gave his "chill wind blowing in America" rant a while back: the National Press Club.

"There are causes worth fighting for even if you know that you will lose," Dreyfuss explained.

"Unless you are willing to accept torture as part of a normal American political lexicon, unless you are willing to accept that leaving the Geneva Convention is fine and dandy, if you accept the expansion of wiretapping as business as usual, the only way to express this now is to embrace the difficult and perhaps embarrassing process of impeachment," the actor added.

In addition to informing the press and the world that torture is the norm in the United Steates and our nation has left the Geneva Convention, Dreyfuss announced that he is not a liberal but instead is a "libo-conservo-middle-of-the-roado," something that he has apparently been for "many years."

From the looks of things, Dreyfuss doesn't believe in treating President Bush in a "middle-of-the-roado" manner, having called him in 2004 "arrogant and incompetent" and "the enemy of thoughtfulness."

Perhaps more strikingly "libo" than "conservo" is the fact that over the last decade and a half Dreyfuss gave more than $30,000 to fellow "middle-of-the-roados" Carl Levin, Charles Schumer, Patrick Leahy, Al Gore and Barbara Boxer, among others, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Incidentally, Dreyfuss has a film scheduled to come out soon. It's the remake of "The Poseidon Adventure."

Guess he's seeking a comeback with a shipwreck.
