Iran Calls Blair Criticism 'Hateful'

TEHRAN -- Iran on Wednesday lambasted a call by Prime Minister Tony Blair for Middle Eastern countries to form an alliance against Tehran.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini described Blair's comments as "hateful" and said they were consistent with Britain's "destructive intervention in regional matters".

"Britain's negative and divisive approach and the war mongering and unilateral policies of (U.S. President George W.) Bush and Blair have caused tension and extremism in the region and made people in the region abhor their policies," Hosseini said in a statement.

But he said Blair's remarks "cannot damage the brotherhood, friendship and good neighbourliness of the countries of the region."

Speaking in Dubai, Blair called on moderate leaders across the region to join a "monumental struggle" between democracy and extremism.

"We must recognise the strategic challenge the government of Iran poses; not its people, possibly not all of its ruling elements, but those presently in charge of its policy," he said.

"Our response should be to expose what they are doing, build the alliances to prevent it and pin them back across the whole of the region," Blair said.

Like Washington, Britain accuses Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons and of fuelling instability in Iraq, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine. Iran denies the charges.
