HONOLULU -- A group of a dozen or so Hawaii Democratic leaders gathered at the state Capitol yesterday to get Illinois Senator Barack Obama to run for president.
The group announced its effort to collect local signatures on a national petition to encourage the Hawaii native son to run.
It says Obama's island roots and aloha spirit single him out as the best choice for 2008.
Obama was born in Honolulu and graduated from Punahou School.
His advisers have said he would consider his choices over the holidays, after his annual Christmas trip to Hawaii to visit his grandmother.
Obama was elected to the Senate in 2004, the same year he gained national exposure with a keynote address at the Democratic national convention.
