A Sleeping U.S. Invites Disaster
Barrett Kalellis
Monday, Dec. 11, 2006

The embarrassingly inadequate and wrong-headed Iraq Study Group report, concocted by James Baker and the other "men of yesterday," continues the myth that good old pre-9/11 diplomacy will resolve Middle East conflicts and bring about regional stability.

Although Saudi princes would be pleased by this approach, this naïve faith only underscores America's inability to deal with militant Islam on the march.

The widespread ignorance of Islam and Islamic teaching on the part of politicians, the media, and Americans in general, particularly as it relates to jihadism, has been a serious detriment to current U.S. efforts in Iraq and foreign policy relations with other countries in the region for decades.

Story Continues Below

Some of the reasons for this ignorance stem from lack of concern on the part of Americans about religions other than their own, particularly those that are alien to this soil and represent a theology and political and social ideology at odds with American historical traditions and our way of life.

Other, more sinister reasons are suggested by scholar Walid Phares in a recent cover story in Homeland Security Today magazine. When it comes to the Middle East, Phares argues, American classrooms "have been deprived of knowledge on social, historical, ethnic, and ideological movements rising to challenge the United States."

Debate on public policy about national security and the jihadist movement has been left to academic, government and media elites, whose opinions have been off-target because of deliberate lack of information or outright deception.

With college and university history and Middle Eastern studies departments corrupted by Saudi Wahhabist and other ideologue funding, political science, international relations and, ultimately, defense and security studies across the land have blurred the true picture of global jihadist movements, leaving in its place only apologetics.

Phares calls this inadequate education a primary cause for the derailment of "national analysis" — in the media, judicial system, and at all levels of government — in correctly assessing the jihadist threats to our country.

But the larger issue that Americans don't perceive is the threat that Islamic ideology portends for our society, our culture, and our mores. And because it is derived from religious belief, analysts in the media have been afraid to discuss it fully and completely for fear of multicultural backlash or being called a bigot.

To those who have studied history, Muslim intimidation, aggression, and violence is an old story. The political, economic, social, moral, and intellectual failures of Muslim states and societies suffused with Islam can be traced to Islam itself. The most oppressive religion on the planet, Islam is intolerant of non-believers, mistreats women and suffers Qur'an-schooled tyrants readily since the will of the people does not count.

According to one observer, "It also puts constraints on the free and skeptical inquiry necessary for science, and on so many different means of artistic expression (sculpture, all depictions of living creatures in painting, most music) that ‘Islamic civilization' has been made such a wretched thing."

Slumbering Americans and their political leaders still do not recognize the incremental warning signs. According to recent study, 80 percent of the Saudi-funded mosques and madrassas in the U.S. preach hatred toward Jews and Christians. There have been terror attacks planned in these mosques, funds raised for overseas terror organizations, yet their Muslim leaders more concerned with blocking anti-terror efforts than raising their voices in opposition.

In America, Muslims are gaining power more through peaceful means by shifts in population than by covert violence, although we have not yet seen the last of terrorist attacks in the homeland. In Hamtramck, Mich., the sizable Muslim population was appeased by the city council to allow the Islamic call to prayer to be blasted over mosque loudspeakers five times day and night, to the consternation of the non-Muslim community.

Newly minted U.S. Muslim legislators are now insisting that the Qur'an be used for oath-taking in swearing-in ceremonies rather than the Bible. This should raise questions for constituents as to whether the officeholder is swearing allegiance to the United States or to the theocracy outlined in the Qur'an, so much of which is at variance with our form of government.

Given the present population trends, it has been predicted that Western Europe will be totally Islamicized by the year 2050. It is high time in this country that we have a full understanding of what a creeping Islamicization will entail. If we do not — if our eyes and ears remain willfully clouded — America as we know it will cease to exist.
