Venezuela Drops Bid for U.N. Council Seat; Nominates Bolivia

LA PAZ, Bolivia -- Venezuela will abandon its bid for a seat on the U.N. Security Council and nominate Bolivia as a candidate, Bolivian President Evo Morales said Tuesday.

"Comandante Chavez called me this morning and said he could not get the two-thirds he needed for the Security Council. "Chavez said he will leave the candidacy to Bolivia. We're candidates for the Security Council," Morales said, referring to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Venezuela's foreign ministry was not immediately available to comment.

Venezuela had faced off against Guatemala for the seat, but Guatemala, which was supported by the United States, lacked the required two-thirds majority to win a seat on the 15-nation Security Council.
