One Reporter's Opinion: A Welcome Mat for Terrorists
George Putnam
Friday, Oct. 20, 2006

It is this reporter's opinion that a recent Homeland Security report provides a real shocker. "The report is alarming and eye-opening, to say the least," says Congressman Tom Tancredo, chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus. This report confirms our worst fears and shows that we must focus on border security NOW and a guest worker plan LATER.

Tancredo says, "The only thing compromised will be the lives of the American people if we continue to allow big business and unions to force the issue on the guest worker aspect of the immigration/border security debate."

Shockingly, the Homeland Security report confirms that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigations reveal that illegals have been smuggled from the Middle East to staging areas in Central and South America before being smuggled illegally into the U.S. The report also confirms that members of Hezbollah have already entered the U.S. across our Southwest border.

Story Continues Below

This government report states that U.S. military and intelligence officials believe Venezuela is emerging as a potential hub of terrorism in the Western Hemisphere. It is further charged that the Venezuelan government is issuing identity documents to be used to obtain U.S. visas and enter the country.

Tancredo concludes that the Homeland Security report confirms once again what the American people have known for years – that our porous borders provide a welcome mat for terrorists. [To obtain a copy of this report, see note at end.]

This government report follows amazing news that China is erecting a massive barbed-wire-and-concrete fence along parts of its border with North Korea. Scores of Chinese soldiers are at work in the farmland area near the border of the Yalu River, erecting concrete barriers 8 to 15 feet tall, and they managed to erect the fence in only four days. Interestingly, the soldiers were dressed in camouflage.

Isn't it fascinating that fences are built by Israel, Spain and now China to prevent smuggling and illegal crossing; yet our proposed 700-mile fence along our border with Mexico has brought outrage from the Mexican government. Mexico threatens to go to the United Nations to challenge U.S. fence plans. Mexico calls our proposed fence every type of violation at an international level. But why?

Obviously, the U.S. is facing a double standard on many fronts. Not only are other countries building barriers on their borders, all the while condemning the U.S. for doing so, but also there is under way a secret plan for a north-south superhighway from Mexico through the U.S. and into Canada – part of a long-range scheme by the internationalists ultimately to form a "North American Union" similar in structure to the European Union.

It's time that America goes its own way. We must protect our own citizens first, and that means doing everything we can to seal our borders. As English historian and philosopher Arnold Toynbee observed, all great civilizations rise and fall, and an autopsy of history would show that "Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder."

A copy of the Homeland Security report, titled "A Line in the Sand: Confronting the Threat at the Southwest Border," is posted on Congressman Tancredo's Web site, http://tancredo.house.gov/irc/welcome.htm
