North Korea Rejects 'Gangster-Like' Sanctions

Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006

UNITED NATIONS -- Within minutes of the United Nations Security Council imposing new sanctions on North Korea, its U.N. ambassador Pak Gil Yon told the members their actions were "gangster-like."

He said the sanctions amounted to an "act of war" against the government in Pyongyang.

After a rambling speech before the 15-member Council, Pak then abruptly exited the Council chamber, leaving the assembled diplomats shrugging their shoulders.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, said he was "disturbed" by the North Korean action, but confessed it was not "unexpected."

"I would hope that the North Korean ambassador was expressing his personal thoughts before the Council, but I doubt it," Bolton told reporters.

The U.S. diplomat declined to comment on what moves the White House may next consider if North Korea does not adhere to the Council's demands.
