WASHINGTON -- Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman issued the following statement on the Senate's confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito to be an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court:
"The Senate's vote to confirm Judge Samuel Alito today is a victory for jurisprudence, the integrity of the judicial confirmation process, and the American people. By soundly rejecting calls for a filibuster from Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, the Senate sent a message to the far-left that they cannot destroy the integrity of the judiciary. By voting to confirm Judge Alito, the Senate also sent a message that partisan politics cannot keep a clearly well-qualified jurist from serving on the nation's highest court.
"Judge Samuel Alito, now Justice Alito, will serve on the Court with compassion, fairness and respect for the rule of law. President Bush made a very wise selection, and the Senate overcame vicious partisan attacks, to carry out their constitutional duty to seat Justice Samuel Alito on the Supreme Court."
