Plebiscite for Annihilation
John L. Perry
Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006

Grandmother used to say, "Pretty is as pretty does." Adlai Stevenson said, "Your elected officials serve you right."

Grandma and Adlai had it right when they said, in so many words, that people are no better than what they really are. They could have been talking about the Palestinian electorate.

George W. Bush was close to being right all the time when he said that people who freely elect their governments don't make war on their neighbors. He would have had it right every time if he had said, "Well, most of the time anyway."

The Palestinians concurred at the polls on Jan. 26, in the first opportunity they ever had in their entire history to express their true feelings in a free election. Their majority used that occasion to show the world they have for generations raised their children on hatred and violence as the only reason for their very being.

Story Continues Below

No More Make-Believe

Results of this free election in Palestine leave the vaunted Mid East "peace process" as road kill on a road map to nowhere. It is an embarrassment to President Bush, to his foreign policy – in fact, to the entire free world – that the people of Palestine voted for the very antithesis of democracy. In voting overwhelmingly for the Hamas terrorist candidates, they even embarrassed themselves, as human beings. Only they don't seem acquainted with embarrassment.

Actually, they probably shouldn't be embarrassed for turning their newly formed government over to the Hamas Party of murder. After all, they voted for exactly what they want, and thus for what they really are. At least they were being honest.

What they honestly want – as their now-elected leaders have been saying over and over for years – is to try to annihilate every last Israeli man, woman and child, to drive the survivors into the Mediterranean Sea and to wipe the democratic Jewish state forever off the map of the world.

Ultimate Losers

In the Palestinians' first authentic election – induced, ironically, by the painstaking but starry-eyed efforts of the United States over many years – they voted overwhelmingly for genocide. In so doing, they sealed their own fate, brought on their own doom.

They did this by making it clear – for all to see – that they believe Israel and a Palestinian state cannot, and must not, exist on the same planet, and that they are hell-bent on making that a bloody reality.

They set in motion the death train so many people of good will, including some within the Palestinian ranks, have feared for decades. Now it is out in the open. This will have to be a war to the end, the end of either the Jewish state or a Palestinian state. This is one of history's win-lose situations. There is no longer a middle ground.

No Way Out Now

It will be Palestine, not Israel, that is destroyed. The United States will inexorably be drawn into this death struggle. Here is how this will play out:

Step back and look at who is watching Palestine at this moment. Syria next door is watching to take its cue on just how far it can go toward annihilating Israel, and get away with it.

Who's watching Syria? Iran, next door to Syria – and its true puppeteer– is watching closely to learn if Syria can become the instrument of Israel's death. Will Syria do the deed, or will Iran have to lob nuclear-tipped missiles onto Tel Aviv?

Who's watching Iran? North Korea, which shares Iran's madness for a nuclear arsenal, will be all eyes, judging from the degree of Iran's success the extent to which it can go toward triggering World War III without self-destructing.

The Chinese Puzzle

Who's watching North Korea? Communist China is, as it plays its perilous double game – dreading a nuclear Korean peninsula in its backyard while delighting in seeing its ultimate nemesis, the United States, struggling to keep the lid on proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Who's watching China? You can bet Russia under the rule of its former KGB bureaucrat is. Russia is on a tightrope, trying to re-emerge as a great power, wind-milling in the air to find a toehold somewhere between the two giants without being squashed.

Who's watching all those watching each other? Uncle Sam of course.

Because of such optical dominoes, the United States cannot ignore the consequences of the plebiscite for annihilation that's just taken place in Palestine. It cannot stand by and watch Israel be eradicated. Not from a strategic political position. Not from a position of vital national interest. Not from a position of human decency.

Rude Reality of Realpolitik

It is awful that this issue cannot be stopped, skirted or postponed short of war. But there are such things as inevitable conflict in the history of this world, and this is one of them.

No, free elections do not always preclude war. Pretty really is as pretty does. In this instance, a free election has made it clear there are times when it takes war to preserve free elections. And Palestinians who elected Hamas officials really do deserve what they get.

There is no compromising with fanatics intent upon slaughter. You don't negotiate with their likes; you defeat them. Or they destroy you.

Like it or not, this is the leadership lot in life of whoever is the world's only super power. Thank God it is the United States and that the United States has a president who is up to the job.
