1. Jack Abramoff's Dad Blasts George Clooney

George Clooney may have played some funny characters on the big and little screen, but recently the actor demonstrated a real-life lack of comedic talent.

While accepting the first award of the night at the Golden Globes, Clooney let loose with a joke.

Unfortunately, his attempt at humor fell flat with the audience. It also prompted an angry response from the butt of the joke, Jack Abramoff's dad.

Here's how the gag went. While picking up the Best Supporting Actor award for "Syriana," Clooney decided to send a thanks out to Jack Abramoff.

He also mused aloud, "Who would name their kid Jack with the last words 'off' at the end of your last name? No wonder that guy is screwed up."

Septuagenarian Frank Abramoff wrote an open letter to Clooney, which was published in the Palm Springs Desert Sun.

The senior Abramoff characterized Clooney's attack on his son as "glib and ridiculous."

"Your obscene query as to the choice his mother and I made in naming him brought shame and dishonor on you and your profession," Abramoff chided.

"What drove you to this lapse in lucidity, I can never know, but you need to know that your words were deeply hurtful to many innocent and decent people who love my son and who cherish our family," he added.

The father of the now infamous lobbyist told the Desert Sun, "When you see something like that on a show for 500 million people, it was not only a slap in my son's face but in my father's."

The Left Coast Report is astounded at how effortlessly bleeding heart liberals can kick a guy and his family when they're down.

2. Steven Spielberg Calls Critics of 'Munich' 'Extreme'

Steven Spielberg recently let off some steam to German news weekly Der Spiegel, complaining about critics of his latest film "Munich."

"Should you leave the debate to the great over-simplifiers? The extreme Jews and extreme Palestinians who consider any kind of negotiated settlement to be a kind of treason?" the famed filmmaker asked.

"I wanted to use the medium of film to make the audience have a very intimate confrontation with a subject that they generally only know about in an abstract way, or only see in a one-sided way," Spielberg shared.

One of the critics of "Munich" happens to be yours truly. I was troubled by the film's historical inaccuracy and said so in my review. I also found fault in the equating of Israeli assassins and Palestinian militants.

Spielberg responded to movie reviews like mine by characterizing the critiques as "nonsense."

"These critics are acting as if we were all missing a moral compass. Of course it is a horrible, abominable crime when people are taken hostage and killed like in Munich," he said.

"But it does not excuse the act when you ask what the motives of the perpetrators were and show that they were also individuals with families and a history.... Understanding does not mean forgiving. Understanding does not mean being soft, it is a courageous and strong stance."

The Left Coast Report is thankful that during WWII most filmmakers weren't trying to "understand" Adolf.

3. Ron Howard's Daughter's 'Challenging' Nude Scene

What's up with Opie?

Ron Howard is currently busy directing what may arguably end up being the most serious attack on Christianity ever to emerge from Hollywood - the film version of "The Da Vinci Code" novel.

Opus Dei, a Catholic group featured in the book, is asking that the movie be given an adult rating because children should be protected from prevarication about Catholicism.

Meanwhile Ron's daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, will appear in an explicit sex scene in the new Lars von Trier film called "Manderlay."

Bryce got her breakthrough in Hollywood the old-fashioned way - through nepotism. She appeared in her daddy's flicks.

In "Manderlay," the second film in an anti-American and anti-female trilogy by Danish director von Trier, Bryce plays the same character portrayed by Nicole Kidman in the first installment, "Dogville."

The New York Post asked Bryce about the impact of her first nude scene on her parents.

"They're really proud," she said. "In particular, my dad was really impressed with what Lars did cinematically. Of course, it's a little challenging to see their daughter go through what I went through. But they get it. They know I'm an actor," she added.

The Left Coast Report wishes Aunt Bea were around to dress down the whole family.

4. E! Reporter's Golden Gropes

After what he did at the Golden Globes, E! correspondent Isaac Mizrahi should be banned from the Oscars.

During the live red carpet coverage of the recent Globes, the openly gay fashion designer groped Scarlett Johansson's breast, looked down Teri Hatcher's dress and asked Eva Longoria about her pubic hair.

E! has not received any official complaints from the actresses who were on the receiving end of Mizrahi's Golden Globes misconduct.

But a comment made by Mizrahi to Charlize Theron about her Oscar-winning role in "Monster" is creating quite a stir with Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

He referred to Theron's character as a "scary dyke with bad teeth," prompting a complaint from GLAAD.

GLAAD is also seeking a meeting with the producers of "American Idol" because, according to the group, the hit show is "increasingly homophobic."

What really offended GLAAD were some remarks made by Judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. Cowell told a prospective idol to "shave off your beard and wear a dress." And Jackson asked another, "Are you a girl?"

The Left Coast Report wonders if for pink penance the duo will be locked in a room and forced to watch "Dancing with the Stars."

5. Tinseltown Tidbits

When late night host Conan O'Brien first noticed that a Finnish female president seeking re-election was his doppelganger, he knew he'd struck comic gold.

But how could O'Brien ever have anticipated that as a result of his ribbing, and the routine airing of his show in Finland, he'd end up knee deep in an international election controversy?

Conan made his support for Finland's Tarja Halonen a feature of his nightly talk-fest "Late Night with Conan O'Brien."

"Why do I support Tarja Halonen? Because she's got the total package: a dynamic personality, a quick mind, and most importantly - my good looks," Conan explained.

The NBC host's endorsement apparently ticked off Tarja's opponent, Finance Minister Sauli Niinisto.

"He's just making fun of the whole election," the campaign manager for Niinisto said.

There's no comment yet on whether Hillary intends to opt for the Conan doo.

Meanwhile the Golden Palace Web site is paying out large sums of money for wacky celebrity stuff.

Noted for its unusual assortment of memorabilia (that incidentally includes a partially eaten cheese sandwich thought to contain the image of the Virgin Mary, which sold for $28,000), the company claims to have purchased a recent Angelina Jolie ultrasound (possible offspring of Jolie and Brad Pitt) for $38,000.

A written press release declares that the company is "always on the lookout for unconventional ways to make headlines."

The firm also paid $25,000 for a William Shatner kidney stone, which was passed last fall by the "Boston Legal" actor.

Fortunately, the money raised from the sale of the stone will go to Habitat for Humanity.

"This takes organ donors to a new height, to a new low, maybe. How much is a piece of me worth?" Shatner quipped to the Associated Press.

The stone was so big, Shatner joked, "You'd want to wear it on your finger."

Geena Davis may not be sporting a stone that large on her finger, but she's acquired an additional notch on her belt.

Davis' Hillary paver "Commander In Chief" has emerged as an ABC fave while NBC's "The West Wing" is about to bite the dust.

After a slew of awards and heaps of liberal acclaim spanning seven seasons, NBC evidently could no longer prop the Dem fantasy up and ignore its poor ratings.

The Left Coast Report believes the TV drama will probably fold up its set; that is unless it manages to be kept alive through the lobbying efforts of Al Jazeera.
