LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and three other governors are in Iraq on a surprise visit to their states' troops, his spokeswoman said Tuesday morning.
Huckabee was joined on the trip by Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal, said Huckabee spokeswoman Alice Stewart.
They all left for Iraq on Sunday after receiving classified briefings at the Pentagon, she said.
"The Department of Defense set this trip up for the purpose of making these governors aware of the global war on terror," Stewart said. "It's important for the governors to be on the ground and visit with the troops."
Huckabee's first stop was at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, where he had dinner with soldiers from Arkansas and gave an Arkansas Razorbacks team cheer.

"They called the Hogs," Stewart said. "They shared stories about their time there."
Huckabee's itinerary also included stops in various parts of Iraq and briefings by Gen. George Casey, the top U.S. commander in Iraq. He also met with U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalizad.
Stewart said the governor's office could not release details of Huckabee's visit earlier because of security reasons and would not say when he is expected to return.
"This has been in the works for quite some time," Stewart said. "It's been going on for several days, but we've been restricted for security reasons."
Huckabee, a Southern Baptist minister, had been scheduled to appear at the annual March for Life anti-abortion rally Sunday but did not appear because of the Iraq trip.
