CNN's Hypocritical President Klein

Bob Costas is right.
There was probably nobody in America who was sitting there
wondering what a former sportswriter, no matter how good an interviewer he
might be, could add to the Natalee Holloway case, so declining to spend a
Thursday night on CNN adding nothing to a story better told elsewhere proves
once again the wisdom of a man who knows what he doesn't know.
Story Continues Below
Greta van Susteren used to try murder cases. She was a defense
lawyer long before she was a television anchor. She knows how you put these
investigations together and how you don't - what steps have to be taken now
or never. In addition to getting great ratings, she has put the Aruban
police and investigators to shame.
Only a fool would compare the two.
Or Jon Klein.
Yet that is exactly what Klein has done, taking it as another opportunity to take his usual public shot at his foot:
"It's easy, and it's brainless," Klein said in a telephone
interview with a newspaper reporter, explaining why cable news outlets have
gravitated to the Holloway story, comparing the case to running "Law and Order" with the same plot every night.
On one day in August when 14 Marines were killed in a roadside
bombing in Iraq, he pointed out that Greta, who was in Aruba, stuck with the
Holloway case. "Fourteen Americans dead, and they have Natalee Holloway on,
and they're supposedly America's news channel."
I work for Fox News, America's News Channel, which has condemned
Klein for his hypocrisy.
While CNN President Klein has claimed boasting rights for
Costas' and his supposed adherence to higher standards of newsgathering, the
Jon everyone actually trusts, Jon Stewart, had a field day Wednesday night
sampling the serious stories covered by CNN itself, one more ludicrous than
the other. There's plenty of junk on CNN, not to mention the efforts of the
ethically challenged ex-prosecutor Nancy Grace, whose show Klein apparently
doesn't oversee.
So I don't even pretend to be fair and balanced. But I'm sick
and tired of what a Jewish mother like me can recognize a mile away for what
it is: whining.
You'd think this guy didn't control a cable news channel.
You'd think he'd already been sent off to be dean of a
journalism school.
If you don't like the news in Iraq, go cover it -- don't whine
about Fox's coverage.
Stop focusing so hard on what the media are doing about the war
they aren't covering, and start covering the war.
Go find out why the 14 Marines died, what was wrong with their
vehicles, how come they don't have tanks like the Army does, what it would
have taken to save them, where their families stand now.
Tell me something I don't know, not something about what the
other guy is or isn't doing about it.
I have never in my short life seen a time when this country
faced so many serious issues of policy and the media were so obsessed with
themselves, at the expense of the very serious issues faced by those at the
real, encroaching fringe.
At a time when the First Amendment is truly up for grabs, when
decent men and women are discovering that they can be punished for what they
believe and what they say because they worship a different God than the rest
of us, the big debate is whether an unbelievably prominent and
well-represented New York Times reporter should be in prison protecting an
unbelievably high-placed White House official.
Instead of complaining that the public isn't outraged enough,
tell us the stories that will outrage us. They aren't about The New York
Times, or CNN, or Jon Klein's navel.
Greta goes out and investigates. She does what she does best.
Beats whining.
