VATICAN CITY -- Thousands of people interrupted the funeral of Pope John Paul II with calls for his immediate canonisation.

A section of the vast throng of mourners at Saint Peter's Square broke into a chant of "Santo, Santo" lasting about seven minutes, many of them holding up Polish flags and banners reading "Santo Subito" (sainthood at once).

Reports say that about 10,000 of the 300,000 people on the square were chanting at one point.

Roman authorities say that between two to four million people have come to pay respects to the pontiff since his body was laid in state on Monday.
