Immigrant Parents Want Schools to Translate for Them

Immigrant parents in New York want the city council to pass a bill called the Education Equity Act, which would require the city's education department to translate documents and provide interpretation services for non-English-speaking parents or guardians.

Supporters say the bill will guarantee all parents an opportunity to help their children learn by helping immigrant parents understand their children's report cards, parent-teacher conferences and other school-parent communications. Immigrant advocacy groups plan to hold a Tuesday morning press conference in downtown Manhattan to protest what they see as "widespread national origin discrimination" in New York City public schools.

The groups claim that more than 25 percent of all New York City parents essentially are excluded from participating in their children's education because of language barriers. They see translation services as the best way to help their children succeed in school.

The Education Equity Act reportedly has the support of more than half of the New York City Council.
