  In many instances, human smugglers known as coyotes smuggle people in for money, and in other cases people are trucked in and have died inside trailers. Many have died in the desert trying to make a journey without food or water in extreme weather.

This human tragedy is played out every day, to the point where there are now an estimated 12 to 15 million illegals in the United States, the largest number in California. Under the Bush administration, the number of illegal immigrants crossing the border has increased by 25 percent.

Our borders are broken, and the federal government is to blame for its failure to secure them even in the wake of 9/11.

The cost of this problem pointed out so well by the Minuteman Project this past month is staggering as well. Billions of dollars are spent by the various states to deal with the burden placed mainly on social welfare services and education, but also on prisons. Fully a quarter of those held in the jails in Los Angeles are illegals. Nine out of ten of the outstanding murder warrants in Los Angeles are for those in our country illegally.

Yet amazingly, early in the month, President Bush referred to the Minutemen volunteers as vigilantes. The administration fails to protect our borders. When decent citizens go to the actual scene of the crime to report to the public, they are derided by the White House as criminals. The president has shown in his attempt to pass what he calls a guest worker program that he supports a nearly open border policy.

President Bush would have millions of migrants come to America to work for up to two three-year periods. They would then have to return. And what if they don't? Who is going to make them return? What happens when these so-called guests have babies, who under our Constitution would be American citizens?

The magnet the president's program would create would result in a flood of illegals that would make today's problem look minor by comparison.

Both political parties have failed to address this issue for different reasons. The Democrats because they see illegals as future minority voters and members of big labor unions, the Republicans because the Wall Street Journal crowd wants a limitless supply of cheap labor. Republicans also believe they can pander to Latino voters by supporting things like driver's licenses for illegals and in-state college tuition for illegals even in states like Utah and Texas, as the Democrats have done or attempted to do in California and elsewhere.

The Minutemen proved that America's borders can be secured when the appropriate attention is paid. Just before they arrived, the government sent an extra 500 Border Patrol agents to the Arizona-Mexico border. Of course, all they did was move them from someplace else. The administration, meanwhile, has come up with only a tenth of the additional Border Patrol agents it promised in the federal budget.

We all owe thanks to the Minuteman Project and must support their continued efforts. The politicians hate it when the light is shined on their failures for all to see, beyond just those who have to live with the problem every day in parts of the United States.

We must keep up the pressure and increase it. We must tell the political parties they don't get any more money until they secure our country and solve our out-of-control immigration problems. If the politicians refuse to see the light, you have to make them feel the heat.
