It is not WHO is right or wrong but WHAT is right or wrong that counts.

I do not like Bill Bennett. However, he is often correct in his observations and insightful in his analysis, notwithstanding my view that he is a pretentious hypocrite. Bennett is not a charlatan ... just a very human and flawed man.
Once upon a time my wife and I were standing in line to have our pictures taken with President Bush (#41) and Bennett assumptively cut in line to have his photo taken before us. No apology, no "excuse me," just the assumptive that he was 'special.'
The only reason I didn't verbally eviscerate his smarmy corpulence was my wife's restraining (and threatening hand). I'm not afraid of Bill Bennett. I AM afraid of my wife. I don't like the guy.
However, the excrement storm over the non-issue of his comments about abortion and crime rates is typical media double standard bullfeathers.

Bill Bennett is a rock solid axiomatic pro-life/anti-abortion type and always has been.
The contentious quote that has the left's panties in a wad is "I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down."
Bennett is correct. He is not a racist and he is not recommending abortion. He was using a Socratic hypothetical and even then qualified it with the broad caveat that it would be "impossible, ridiculous, AND morally reprehensible."
A simple statistical analysis reveals FACTS defenders of the indefensible always gripe about:
According to "The Color of Crime":
Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery.
The single best indicator of violent crime levels in an area is the percentage of the population that is black and Hispanic.
Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving blacks and whites, blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.
Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks. Forty-five percent of their victims are white, 43 percent are black, and 10 percent are Hispanic. When whites commit violent crime, only 3 percent of their victims are black.
Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.
Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially designated hate crimes against whites than vice versa.
Only 10 percent of youth gang members are white.
Hispanics are 19 times more likely than whites to be members of youth gangs. Blacks are 15 times more likely, and Asians are nine times more likely.
Between 1980 and 2003, the U.S. incarceration rate more than tripled, from 139 to 482 per 100,000, and the number of prisoners increased from 320,000 to 1.39 million.
Blacks are seven times more likely to be in prison than whites. Hispanics are three times more likely.
The question of race and crime stats is not a racial profiling situation ... it is a criminal profiling situation.
Jon Entine wrote a fascinating and controversial book several years ago called "Taboo."
When I interviewed Entine, I zeroed in (wait for the pun) on a particular statistic about west African runners. I said, "You have a statistic in your book that states, Since people of west African origin make up about 8 percent of the world population, the statistical chance of this happening purely by luck is .000000000000000000000000000000000001.'"
That is 35 honking zeros!
Jon replied, "It is so beyond the possibility that these things could occur by pure chance or by population genetics. The utter domination of sprinting by people of west African ancestry and the same people's utter haplessness at distance races suggest that there is something at work here. All the science points this way. There is not ambiguous science on this."
Likewise, the statistical data on race and crime is documented. Black leaders and liberal vote panderers may not like the numbers, but denying them is counterintuitive. It would be far better to try to fix the problem (as the Rev. Jesse Peterson does with BOND (Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, http://www.bondinfo.org) than to wave the victimization and racism flags (as the discredited Rev. Jesse Jackson does).
Bill Bennett may be a lout and a boor but he said nothing wrong and the White House in criticizing him demonstrates once again how politically gutless the administration is.
