Chinese Cold War on America and Its Allies
Charles R. Smith
Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005

China is the focus of a new Cold war with America and her allies around the world. One such nation facing the Chinese gun is Japan. The growing tension between Tokyo and Beijing is heating up. China and Japan are at odds over a disputed seabed full of natural gas.

China claims that its territory extends hundreds of miles off the mainland, along a natural shelf formed off the Asian continent. Japan contends the border is located halfway between the two nations as per international law.

The energy dispute at sea led China to send a nuclear powered submarine into Japanese territorial waters late last year.

However, the Chinese Navy has recently stepped up its activity in the disputed waters and Beijing is not above committing more aggressive acts that could lead to a shooting war.

For example, a Chinese destroyer recently aimed its guns at a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force P3-C surveillance plane near the disputed waters off the Chunxiao gas field.

In addition, a Chinese military spy plane was spotted flying south of Kyushu and west of the Nansei Islands. The same type of electronic warfare aircraft of was spotted twice in August operating near Japan in the East China Sea.

A Japanese government source noted that Air Self-Defense Force fighters scrambled to intercept the intruding aircraft because the Chinese military plane had entered Japan's designated air-defense zone.

According to intelligence sources, the aircraft had Electronic Warfare (EW) equipment and the flight showed it was being used to gather radio and electronic emissions from warships, radar and other military facilities and equipment.

MILITARY INTELLIGENCE

Japan is not the only object of Beijing's attention. The recent launch of a string of surveillance satellites and the second manned space flight indicate a growing space-based reconnaissance capability for the People's Liberation Army. The spy satellites are intended to gather information and enhance Beijing's cyber warfare program.

There is no question that the Chinese manned space program is a military operation run by the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The Shenzhou 6 manned vehicle is designed to allow the Chinese Astronauts to return to Earth while leaving its powered orbital module in space. The Shenzhou 6 orbital module is conducting electronic surveillance of U.S. forces in Afghanistan and Iraq after being calibrated by the Chinese Army Astronauts. The unmanned space vehicle is expected to remain in orbit for up to six months.

The threat to the free world is not limited to Chinese electronic and space-based espionage. The PLA Military Intelligence Department (MID) has also been busy inside the west with human spies.

RED MOLE IN CIA HQ

The increased threat of Chinese spies inside the CIA has put the U.S. intelligence agency on full alert. There is currently an agency-wide counterintelligence focus on a suspected Chinese penetration. The Chinese mole hunt has focused on CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

The CIA is not the only agency to on the hunt for Beijing's spies. The FBI is also alert to PLA espionage inside the U.S. "China is the biggest (espionage) threat to the U.S. today," said David Szady, head of the FBI's counterintelligence operations.

The FBI alert is backed by information provided by a number of Chinese defectors in recent months who claim Beijing is engaged in large-scale intelligence-gathering operations in Australia, Canada, and Europe.

The UK's Daily Telegraph reported in July that a Chinese intelligence defector in Belgium who had worked in European universities and companies for more than a decade, has given the Belgian security service detailed information on hundreds of Chinese spies working at various levels of European industry.

Han Guansheng, a former Public Security Bureau official in Shenyang who defected to Canada, stated that Beijing manages informants in Canada's Chinese community and gathers intelligence on key economic areas.

Another recent defector, former Chinese policeman Hao Fengjun, claims to have worked for a Chinese security department known as the 610 Office. The 610 office gathers reports from overseas informants spying on pro-democracy activists and followers of the Falungong meditation movement.

Hao was also granted a protection visa by Sydney in August. Hao also confirmed that China has more spies in Canada than in any other country.

1000 SPIES DOWN UNDER

Chen Yonglin, the first secretary of the Chinese Consulate General in Sydney, Australia, defected to the west in June. Chen told Australian authorities that Beijing had been overseeing a network of more than 1,000 spies and informers in Australia.

Chen charged that the Chinese government is corrupt and oppressive during a recent speech in Paris France. Chen made it clear that economic growth had strengthened the government's grip on Chinese society and its ability to suppress dissent at home and abroad.

"The Chinese Communist Party has been nurtured by economic growth, and now the Communist government has all the resources to be used to persecute people who have different views," stated Chen.

He also charged that corruption was endemic in the Chinese government, based on his experience at the Sydney consulate where he claims he saw more than 100 senior Chinese politicians tour Australia at the taxpayer's expense.

"The government is totally corrupted," stated Chen.
