LONDON – Britain closed its embassy in Yemen on Wednesday because of "specific security concerns" and warned that terrorists were in the end stage of planning assaults against British targets in the country.
"The British embassy will be closed on Jan. 5 in response to specific security concerns," said a statement posted on the Foreign Office's Web site.

As of Dec. 30, "there is specific information that terrorists are in the final stages of planning attacks against British targets and other Western interests in Yemen," the statement added, warning Britons to be vigilant in public places, such as hotels.
Foreign Office officials were not immediately available for comment.
Yemen, the ancestral home of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, is a tribal-dominated country at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. It long has been a haven for Islamic extremists and the scene of numerous terrorist attacks, including the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole destroyer in the port of Aden that killed 17 American sailors.
After the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, Yemen's government joined the American-led war on terror and cracked down on militants operating within its borders.
The United States has since provided equipment to Yemen's military to beef up port and border controls and trained Yemeni security forces to battle militants in a country previously known for tolerating Islamic extremists.
