Palestinians May Get Control of West Bank Towns

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas told his security chiefs Wednesday to get ready for assuming control of four West Bank cities within 10 days, participants said.
Two commanders initially said that Israel had agreed to the handover. However, one of the participants later said Abbas told them to expect an Israeli withdrawal from these cities within 10 days.

The cities are Ramallah, Tulkarem, Qalqiliya aned Jericho.
A senior Israeli official said the handover has not yet been discussed, noting that Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz is abroad. However, Mofaz said in radio interviews over the weekend that Israel was ready to hand over security control in West Bank cities as soon as Palestinian security forces were ready to assume responsibility there.
