NEWARK, N.J. -- Police set up metal fences surrounding the
Prudential building, blocked off two city streets, and armed
themselves with assault rifles Sunday after federal authorities
warned of a possible terrorist attack on it and other financial
institutions.
Newark police Detective Todd McClendon declined to offer
specifics on other security measures planned for the building,
which stands nearly 25 stories tall and is one of Newark's highest
structures.

"We'll just say that it is a significant increase of
security," he said. "We've taken the threat seriously like we've
taken all threats."
In a government warning Sunday, the Prudential building was
named as a target along with the Citicorp building and the New York
Stock Exchange in New York City, and the International Monetary
Fund and the World Bank buildings in Washington.
"I'm worried," said Demond Blackwell, 25, a construction
worker who watched from across the street. "We're working around
here right down the street."
But Kristin White, 23, a law student at Seton Hall University,
said she did not take the terror threat seriously.
"I don't trust the reliability of these threats," she said.
Marc Mitchell, 40, an unemployed machine operator from Newark,
said he also was not worried about terrorists, but for different
reasons.
"Right about now I'm not too concerned about them doing too
much in Newark," he said. "Newark is like a sister city to New
York and that means it's not going to get much publicity. If they
really want to make an impact they're going to do it in New York."
Spokesmen for Prudential did not return several phone calls
seeking comment.
