Answering America's Critics
Pat Boone
Wednesday, July 14, 2004
My longtime friend and attorney Chuck Hurewitz sent me the following email diatribe. Though he’s a Democrat and I’m a lifelong Republican, we’re good friends and I felt I needed to answer these absurd charges. Chuck’s too intelligent to have originated this email, and perhaps he thought I would find it humorous – but it is so skewed and nonsensical, that I really don’t find it funny.

Things you have to believe to be a Republican today:

Story Continues Below

Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush’s daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a “we can’t find Bin Laden” diversion.

Remember the Ayatollah Khomaini and the American hostages he held for so long? Remember the war between Iran and Iraq? Saddam at that point was our “friend” because he was the Ayatollah’s enemy, and if Reagan armed him it was in our national interest. But remember when Saddam literally kidnapped the country Kuwait? In national and humanitarian interests, President Bush severely chastised our former “friend” and restored Kuwait its freedoms, indeed, its nation. For a while afterwards, there was good reason for Americans to help Iraq rebuild and to reestablish vital connections to its oil supply, though we now knew Saddam was not our “friend”. And after 9/11, with the whole world knowing that Saddam had used biological and other weapons on a half million of his own people and according to available intelligence was planning to develop nuclear capability while he played a ten year “shell game” with the UN, it made sense to take some preemptive action. Or would you rather just wait till the next 9/11 and the next?

Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

Ronald Reagan taught us masterfully that the old “carrot and stick” methodology will work with nations, like the USSR. We have a lot to gain in cooperation with far eastern giants, while Fidel Castro has gotten fat on our carrots and ignored the stick. Who needs him?

The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.

Our highest national priority has been doing what the United Nations was supposed to do, and said for ten years they would do, and didn’t – taking nuclear and biological weaponry and potential out of the hands of proven terrorists. The United Nations has become largely an ineffectual discussion group.

A woman can’t be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.

The issue is not decisions a woman makes about her own body (which she should make before pregnancy) but about the body of her child. The multi-national corporation reference makes no sense at all; there are regulations everywhere about how business can be transacted, both domestically and internationally. Sounded good as a quick smear, though, didn’t it?

Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.

This almost too ridiculous to answer, but Jesus has proven He loves every human being enough to die for them, certainly including Hillary Clinton. Certain specific anti-social and fatal human behaviors do come under condemnation, though – because He loves us.

The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans’ benefits and combat pay.

You improve military morale greatly by praising, writing and supporting them, including their Commander in Chief. And the President and Congress are already addressing greatly increasing veteran benefits and combat pay; it diminished drastically under Bill Clinton, because he despised the military, but inequities are being corrected as we speak.

If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won’t have sex.

Not quite accurate; if permission and provision isn’t thrust on school kids, they won’t have as much sex as they’re having now – though they consistently quote Bill Clinton about what “is and isn’t sex.” A great presidential legacy.

A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.

“Allies” are people who rally to your side, who share burdens and priorities, such as the British and the Australians, Japan and thirty-five or forty others. It happens that Germany and France had too many monetary interests and relationship with Saddam Hussain to become our allies. France was getting 40% of its oil from Iraq and Germany receiving billions in trade – in defiance of UN sanctions. They’ll be back.

Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.

Whoever said anything about providing health care to “all Iraqis”? Hillary? Here at home, President Bush has taken tremendous heat from his own party for managing to greatly increase health care benefits, particularly to seniors. That’s what a compassionate conservative does. But it’s true that Americans are not guaranteed health care as a “right”; that’s a socialist dream, and comes with a 90% tax rate price tag.

HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.

Hillary thought so, but her health care plan self destructed and Americans are still looking for a “safety net” that we can afford and that won’t bankrupt the tax payers.

Global warming and tobacco’s link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

Who originated this – Michael Moore? Nobody gives this definition of junk science and few people credit him with being a documentarian. Creationism should be taught in schools as it has been since the beginning of time, and if you want to throw in a theory like evolution, okay.

A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense.

No, a president lying under oath and right in the face of the American people is an impeachable offense, not to mention the moral stain on the Oval Office itself. And that brings us back to the millions of school kids who are quoting this former president on the definition of sex.

A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.

President Bush – and Congress – relied on information from our best intelligence sources, the CIA, former President Clinton and embedded informants. And though the cost has been great, America is far safer, our enemies have been backed off, and Libya and North Korea are having to give up their nuclear plans. Got a better idea?

Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.

To this one, I say an enthusiastic “amen!” The Constitution and Declaration of Independence do require all office holders to “insure domestic tranquility” to “promote the general welfare” – “deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”!

The public has a right to know about Hillary’s cattle trades, but George Bush’s driving record is none of our business.

It wasn’t Hillary’s affection for cattle that raised the issue, it was inside information – you know the stuff that’s sending Martha Stewart to jail right now? And what has George Bush's driving record got to do with anything? Really, is that you, Michael Moore?

Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you’re a conservative radio host. Then it’s an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.

No, being a drug dealer is a moral failing and a crime; being a drug user is pitiable. Sadly, a great many users become dealers to support their own habits, and the jury is still out regarding Rush Limbaugh and his mistakes. Nobody is condoning those.

You support states’ rights, which means Attorney General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have the right to adopt.

Attorney General John Ashcroft is a good man who is heroically attempting to accomplish almost impossible tasks. The rest of this assertion is just nonsensical babble. How could any sensible person try to protect us against maniacal terrorists without in some way abridging some of our freedoms temporarily? Anybody remember World War II, the shortages, the air raid tests, the sacrifices? That’s the way you win – not by whining and demanding all your “rights,” while your enemies move about freely to blow you right into hell.

What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.

What was it Bill Clinton did in the '60s? Oh yes, he dodged the draft and severely maligned the military – sort of a Dixie Chicken, I guess – while George W. Bush enlisted in the National Guard, flew the notorious “widow maker” jet, and could have been called up into action at any moment. Now what was the question?

Feel free to pass this on. If you don’t send it to at least 10 other people, we’re likely to be stuck with Bush for 4 more years.

Yes, by all means pass this biased misinformation clap trap on to others, at least those who actually want higher taxes, more defiance of God and His revealed will for mankind – oh yes, a one world government. But don’t do it if you want a God-fearing, moral man who is admittedly flawed and imperfect (so were the Apostles Peter and Paul and King David, by the way) and who doesn’t defy his own church on moral and spiritual issues and isn’t anti-military.

Finally, what was it the Bible said? “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” O, and Solomon, generally conceded to be the wisest man who ever lived wrote in Ecclesiastes 10:2 “The mind of the wise inclines to the right, the mind of the fool to the left”. And a thoughtful footnote: Can you imagine what ultra-liberals and a leftist media would do today to Harry Truman, after he dropped a couple of atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? It was a horrible decision that Truman made, but history shows it ended World War II, and saved tens of thousands of lives, both American and Japanese. And today, and for many years since World War II, Japan has been a solid, democratic nation and our ally! Anybody see a possible parallel to today?

Hey Chuck, as you’ll see from the enclosed, I just couldn’t resist responding to this Email you. I appreciate the invitation to lunch, and I think we should have it as soon as we can, okay?

Your pal,
Pat
