Soros Admits Donating $16 Million to Defeat Bush
Jon E. Dougherty, NewsMax.com

It amounts to the largest in-kind donation to a political candidate in American history.

Billionaire George Soros admitted to the New York Times in a report published Monday that he has already donated nearly $16 million to groups seeking to defeat George Bush this November.

It is obvious billionaire financier George Soros doesn't care much for President Bush, and he's putting his money where his mouth is in an unprecedented private effort to see to it Bush loses and John Kerry wins in November.

Financier Soros, who came to the United States decades ago with nothing and built an investment empire worth about $7 billion, has emerged as a primary backer of the Democratic Party.

So far, he's given nearly $16 million of that fortune to defeat Bush. But, he has vowed to defeat George Bush at any cost – even if it meant spending his multi billion dollar fortune. [Please see Richard Poe’s exclusive report on Soros, “George Soros’ Coup,” Click Here.]

"I have come to the conclusion that the greatest contribution I can make to the values that I hold would be to contribute to the defeat of George W. Bush in 2004," Soros said in a recent interview from his Manhattan office.

Soros didn't play a role in partisan American politics prior to this election though he admits he has had friendly relationship with John kerry. Recently, he told the Times, he broke off all contact with the Massachusetts Senator.

But he has expressed his vehement anti-Bush sentiments in advertisements, op-ed pieces, interviews and in a new book, "The Bubble of American Supremacy."

If need be, he'll spend more to unseat the president, a plan which has upset Republicans and wrought no small amount of criticism on Soros from conservative and campaign finance quarters.

"George Soros has purchased the Democratic Party," Christine Iverson, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, told the Times.

Bill O'Reilly, cable's top-rated news program host of "The O'Reilly Factor," skewered Soros a few weeks ago, just a day after the billionaire delivered a scorching anti-Bush speech to the graduating class of Columbia University, in New York City.

The Times noted that the conservative O'Reilly bashed Soros as a "left-wing loony," a "crusading atheist," a "dogmatic globalist" and, finally, a "madman."

America is a ‘Danger’

For his part, Soros, 73, says his efforts have nothing to do with power, privilege and position.

Instead, he sees his battle as a continuation of the decades -- and $4 billion -- he's spent fighting for improved civil rights in authoritarian regimes.

"As a child, he survived the Holocaust in his native Hungary by adopting an assumed identify and, later, he slipped away from the Communists," said the paper. "Those experiences shaped his world view, both as a financier betting on uncertainty and as a philanthropist."

And now, it seems, Soros equates the Bush administration with the same sort of authoritarianism once only associated with the worst sort of dictatorships on the planet.

He has openly described the United States as a “danger” to world peace.

"The government of the most powerful country on earth has fallen into the hands of extremists," he says, referring to the administration. "It didn't take long for the Bush administration to get off the rails and produce disastrous results."

Soros has funded a number of anti-Bush, anti-Republican groups, including:

  • $10 million to America Coming Together, which wants to raise a total of $75 million for grass roots political efforts

  • $2.5 million to left-wing group MoveOn.org, which recently hosted an event at New York University featuring former Vice President Al Gore, who delivered a speech accusing the White House of lying about the need for war in Iraq

  • $300,000 to Campaign for America's Future, a union effort

  • $3 million to a liberal research group, the Center for American Progress being started by John D. Podesta, a former chief of staff for President Bill Clinton

In a statement regarding his ACT gift, Soros said no effort would be spared to defeat Bush.

"The fate of the world depends on the United States and President Bush is leading us in the wrong direction. The Bush doctrine is both false and dangerous. The rest of the world is having an allergic reaction to it, as we have seen in Iraq. We need to change direction," said Soros.

    Counter-attack

For its part, the Republican Party is moving to blunt Soros' efforts.

Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillispie has called on all liberal groups receiving funds from Soros to disclose the amounts they've been given.

And he said the RNC would begin airing ads countering the steady criticism of the White House.

According to the Boston Globe, in a November 2003 report, Gillispie called on groups who monitor such political action committee spending to highlight the influence of big donors like Soros.

"Where are the referees? They swallowed their whistles," Gillespie told the Globe. "They passed laws to prevent this kind of thing."

One such group, Democracy 21, disclosed that by late last year, Soros had given the organization about a quarter of a million dollars. The organization's spokesman argued that despite the gift, his group also focused on Democratic fundraising and spending as well as Republican efforts.

"We are concerned about George Soros's large contributions to affect the 2004 campaign, as we are also concerned about President Bush's decision to swamp the country with $200 million in spending for his uncontested presidential primary race," said Fred Wertheimer.

Also, the GOP is beginning to work through so-called 527 groups, non-profit organizations which, through a loophole in the campaign finance laws, are allowed to raise millions in soft money for issue advertising, provided candidates and parties are not directly involved in the process.
