NewsMax Led the Way in Ousting Dan Rather
NewsMax.com

Dan Rather destroyed himself. But he might have continued his decades of media bias had not NewsMax exposed him for all the world to see.

Throughout its five-year history, NewsMax.com and our print magazine, NewsMax Magazine, have revealed Rather’s attempts to slant the news and his other unethical antics.

One of our top agenda items was holding Dan Rather accountable.

Loyal readers will remember way back in September 2001 when NewsMax Magazine headlined “Rather: Quit Now!” with the dour-looking CBS anchor on our cover.

The subhead branded Rather as he is: “America’s Most Biased Newsman.”

NewsMax Magazine's
Sept. 2001 Cover:
We Led the Way!
The lead paragraph: “Caving in to widespread criticism led by NewsMax.com and its readers, Dan Rather’s CBS Evening News finally stopped ignoring the Condit-Levy story after 11 weeks of silence.”

At the time, Rather had been quick to attack Republican lawmakers for personal wrongdoing, but he censored the Condit-Levy story from CBS viewers for weeks.

Only after intense pressure, led by NewsMax, did Rather relent and report on the national news story.

This year, NewsMax also was one of the leading online outlets to detail how Rather used fake National Guard “documents” in his outrageous attempt to sabotage President Bush’s re-election.

The Associated Press, in one of its stories on the brouhaha, noted NewsMax’s key role.

Among the highlights of NewsMax’s crusading reporting:

  • NewsMax’s poll asking if the sinking anchorman should resign gained national media attention, including from the leading wire service, AP.

The poll, concluded in September, attracted more than 100,000 respondents, and 94 percent said Rather should quit.

  • When he went to Baghdad to shill for genocidal dictator Saddam Hussein, NewsMax contrasted that photo op with Rather’s mistreatment in 1988 of soon-to-be-president G.H.W. Bush.

  • The most infamous example of Rather’s partisan bias: Although he jumped at the chance to smear America’s Republican president with the bogus “documents,” for months he refused to join NBC, ABC, FNC, CNN and other news media in covering embattled Democrat congressman Gary Condit’s link to Chandra Levy.

NewsMax hounded Rather for his outrageous partisanship, kept a daily tally of his insolent failure to report the news and urged readers to complain to CBS. After Rather finally reported the story, he admitted the order came from CBS’s pressured executives.

  • In the current edition of NewsMax Magazine, we again focus on Rather and offer analysis explaining the fallout from his unsuccessful attack on the president.

  • NewsMax was one of the primary promoters of and outlets for CBS whistle-blower Bernard Goldberg, and helped make best sellers of his books “Bias” and “Arrogance” – books that exposed how Rather had politicized his anchor job at CBS.

NewsMax even sponsored a luncheon honoring Goldberg in West Palm Beach, Fla., home of our corporate headquarters.

  • NewsMax publicized lesser-known watchdogs, such as RatherBiased.com

  • NewsMax was one of the media’s few voices to follow Rather’s racially insensitive “Buckwheats” incident and pointed out the double standard for liberals; Trent Lott or any other Republican would have been badgered and forced to resign for uttering such a slur.

Rather has benefited from the double standard for decades, but his blatantly partisan attempt to bring down a president with fictional “evidence” was the straw that gagged the donkey’s mouth.

NewsMax proved its worth once again by challenging a major media establishment figure.
