Possible successors who have been mentioned include:

  • National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice. There is also talk she could replace Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

  • "Most of the speculation on a successor has centered on U.N. Ambassador John Danforth, a Republican and former U.S. senator from Missouri," the Associated Press reported. However, AP later reported, "Administration officials said that Bush will likely name national security adviser Condoleezza Rice to replace him."

  • Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.

  • GOP Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana.

  • Paul Wolfowitz, controversial deputy secretary of defense, would like the job, although his confirmation by the Senate would be difficult, Fox News Channel and MSNBC noted.

Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham are also leaving the administration. As NewsMax reported Friday, Secretary of Education Rod Paige is also stepping down.
