HONG KONG Arab TV broadcaster Al-Jazeera will launch an
English-language news channel toward the end of next year, the
broadcaster announced Wednesday.
Al-Jazeera International will feature news bulletins, talk shows
and documentaries with a focus on developing countries, an area
that the Al-Jazeera feels has been undercovered, the channel's
managing director, Nigel Parsons said in Hong Kong on the sidelines
of a cable TV conference.

He said the new channel will not be a literal translation of
Qatar-based Al-Jazeera's Arabic content, which U.S. officials have
criticized for fanning anti-American sentiment in the Arab world.
Parsons said that Al-Jazeera International would be balanced, that the channel had "no ax to grind," but added "we expect to have
the best coverage of the Middle East" because of Al-Jazeera's
roots in the region.
The move is also part of Al-Jazeera's effort to develop a full
network. It already has a sports channel and will launch a
children's channel by April next year, Parsons said by phone.
It wasn't immediately clear in which countries Al-Jazeera
International will be available.
Parsons said the channel, which has a target launch date of
November 2005, is still signing up broadcasters,
but he expected to "piggyback" on the distribution
network of Al-Jazeera's Arabic channel.
