LOS ANGELES -- Former President Bill Clinton took to the pulpit in Los Angeles Sunday on behalf of embattled California Gov. Gray Davis, who faces an Oct. 7 recall vote.
Clinton told the enthusiastic congregation at the First AME Church that the recall could lead to a chaotic situation in which political leaders shy away from making tough choices. He also invoked the biblical parallel of letting he who is without sin cast the first stone.
It was then off to downtown's Olivera Street tourist area for hand shaking with the voters and a speech by Davis to the Mexican American Political Association in Orange County.
Clinton is the first of a bevy of high profile Democrats jetting into California to buck up the beleaguered Davis. Al Gore, Jesse Jackson and presidential hopefuls John Kerry and Bob Graham will appear with Davis in Los Angeles and the Bay Area during the week.
