California's Supreme Court Rejects Recall Challenges

SACRAMENTO -- The California Supreme Court Thursday rejected legal efforts to postpone or scuttle the recall election of Gov. Gray Davis, now scheduled for Oct. 7.

The Los Angeles Times said California's highest court unanimously rejected four of the five cases before it concerning the recall flap, including a legal challenge filed by the governor.

Davis had argued the structure of the recall - as well as the punch-card voting system used in parts of the state - would disproportionately hurt minority voters.

But the justices approved the nomination process that requires candidates to gather only between 65 to 100 signatures if they pay a $3,500 fee.

Attorneys for Davis told the Times they were disappointed by the ruling and will consult with Davis about a possible appeal
