N. Korea Nukes: Conflicting Reports Issued

BEIJING -- Conflicting reports were issued Thursday concerning North Korea's nuclear weapons programs during six-nation talks being held in Beijing.

The Wall Street Journal said it learned North Korea will soon formerly announce not only that it has nuclear weapons, but it intends to test them.

Russian news media, however, said the North Korean delegation announced it has no ambition to build nuclear weapons and wishes to keep the Korean Peninsula a nuclear-free zone.

The BBC said Russian and Chinese officials announced the participants have agreed to reconvene for more talks. And the BBC's correspondent at the meeting said just agreeing to another summit is a measure of success.

The Wall Street Journal said an unidentified U.S. official said not only did North Korea admit possessing nuclear weapons, but said it intends to demonstrate it has the "means to deliver" nuclear weapons, an apparent reference to that country's ballistic-missile program.

Pyongyang's deputy foreign minister, Kim Yong Il, reportedly made the announcements during a meeting with delegates from the United States, China, South Korea, Japan and Russia.
