One Reporter's Opinion: Your Voice Does Count!
George Putnam
Friday, Aug. 22, 2003

It is this reporter's opinion that too often we say: "My voice is unimportant, no one listens. My vote doesn't count." Not too quick, my friends ... we've had a recent example of how an outcry – your outcry – resulted in a drastic change in a directive from Washington, D.C.

A memo sent to our Border Patrol ordered that in the future they would concern themselves with illegals only at two key checkpoints and other specified borders, but once the invaders were inside the United States, we were to adopt a "hands-off" policy.

Your voice, your calls to Congress, your letters to the editors, your conversations on talk shows, your protests brought about change. The directive was rescinded and we're back to formerly accepted procedures.

Your voice does matter!

However, it's a continuing battle on the immigration front. Here in California we suffer through such phony subversion of immigration laws by so-called "motor voter," matricula consular identification, driver's licenses for illegals and the like. It's a never-ending battle.

At times, one wonders if the illegal aliens don't enjoy greater rights and protection than we natural-born citizens do ... and with minimal responsibility. It's an age of insanity!

In the midst of our own governor's recall, only one key candidate to replace the present governor dares to speak out on the immigration issue. Both Democrats and Republicans, fearful of being branded "racists," willing to cave in to the well-financed Mexican and pro-illegal alien lobby, will not speak out.

Need I remind you again what Phyllis Schlafly said: "Our problem is that the Democrats want the immigrant votes and the Republicans want the cheap labor." It's despicable!

On Oct. 1, the so-called "Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride" (immigrant workers and their allies) plans to invade Washington, D.C., streets, the National Mall and Capitol Hill, demanding amnesty for 9 million illegal aliens.

Thousands of them, backed by radical activists from the Rainbow Coalition and other left-wing organizations, are going to descend on the nation's capitol in an attempt to model the public protest after the civil rights protests of the '50s and '60s, whining about immigrant rights and denouncing "whitey." Incredible as it may seem, they have made this, too, a race issue!

Ultra-liberal representative Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., has called it the "kick-off of a new civil rights movement for our country." Whose side is he on??

There are over a dozen pending bills in Congress that seek to grant some form of amnesty to illegal aliens. Two of them – S.1461 and H.R.2899 – backed by Republicans like John McCain and Jeff Flake, both of Arizona, will come to action this fall.

And the White House is reportedly gearing up for its own battle, quietly pressuring Congress to pass some type of amnesty in order to get them off the hook and pander to ethnic voters in 2004 – and, of course, to cozy-up again with Mexican President Vicente Fox.

But as stated at the outset, when you speak up, when you use pressure, there are still a few political figures hungry for your vote and they WILL listen. It does work.
