U.S. AIDS Cases May Be Increasing Again

ATLANTA -- Federal officials say the number of new AIDS cases in the United States is rising again, for the first time in 10 years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta said preliminary data indicate the number of Americans diagnosed with AIDS increased 2.2 percent last year, the first time the incidence rate of AIDS has risen since 1993.

The Washington Post said if the figures are confirmed, the increase might mark a disturbing turning point in the AIDS situation in the United States, which had appeared to be stabilizing because of decades of intensive safe sex campaigns and the introduction of powerful new anti-viral drugs.

Officials say the increase results from increased risky sexual behavior by young gay men.

Data from 25 states show the number of new HIV diagnoses among gay and bisexual men increased 7.1 percent from 2001 to 2002. HIV diagnoses among gay and bisexual men increased by 17.7 percent since reaching an all-time low during 1999.
