A Gutsy Mother: The Elian case in reverse © 2003 ABIP

The international civilized norm that “the children belong to the parents” was used by the Clinton administration and the Castro regime and his support network in the U.S. to justify the kidnapping and subsequent return of 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez to Cuba.
Conveniently left out by the Clinton administration, the U.S. media and other parties involved in the travesty of justice committed against an innocent child was the fact that Article 5 of the 1976 Communist Constitution of Cuba dictates that all children from elementary school through university be indoctrinated to follow, participate in and promote the goals of communism.
Education is to be geared to the formation of what it calls “the communist personality.” All of this was also ignored by the National Council of Churches (NCC), Pastors for Peace, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and other pro-Castro organizations as well as his admirers in the U.S. Congress.
But Cubans cannot conveniently ignore these horrors that they must face personally every day. That’s is why the Cuban Americans fought against all odds to keep Elian free and to honor his mother’s wishes.
But since the Clinton administration and the U.S. media purposely censored this information, the American people never understood why Cubans were so passionately in favor of freedom for Elian. So the American people did not support this effort and “the child should be with his father” prevailed.
It was not that Cuban Americans are anti-family reunification. Cuban families, like other Spanish cultures, have deep-seated traditions of extremely strong family ties. But Cuban Americans knew that returning Elian to Cuba was not to return him to his father, but to the state (Castro).
They understand very well the indoctrination at school and the separation of parents from their children carried out by Castro’s regime. They all know very well that children are sent from age 11 to work in the fields far from their homes. They know many children return sick and with lice because of the deplorable conditions in the fields and the poor diet. They know about the sexual promiscuity in those “schools.”
There are cases of sexual abuse by the teachers. Many return with venereal diseases and are pregnant (a problem dealt with in Castro’s regime with abortion on demand). This is a contradiction for “religious” organizations like the NCC and Pastors for Peace being such ardent defenders of Castro’s Cuba.
That is why Cuban Americans understood the plight of Elian and the desire of his dead mother for him to be raised and educated with freedom and dignity here in America. Unfortunately, thanks to being so misinformed, America closed its doors to a better future for Elian and to “the best interests of the child.”
But there have been many Elian cases in reverse, where parents have been able to defect and the Cuban regime refuses to let their children go, so they remain hostage in Cuba. Cuba often uses this hostage-holding technique to prevent relatives abroad from talking publicly about the horrible violations of human rights in Cuba or other secrets they know about the regime.
The case of Jose Cohen, who has been living in Miami, is a classic case. A long time ago his wife and three children received their U.S. visas but Castro continues to refuse to allow them to leave.
But Americans don’t know about this case and many others – too many for me to mention here. The U.S. media do not pay attention to any of them, nor does the NCC, Pastors for Peace, ADM or the other organizations in America that are part of Castro’s support network that was instrumental in returning Elian to Castro.
But I will expose the latest Elian-in-reverse case. He is also 6 years old, like Elian, but his name is Israel Peru Morejon. He is separated from his parents, both alive and living outside Cuba. Israel’s mother is Maria Elena Morejon, a Thermo Energy Engineer specializing in Nuclear Security. She is a legal resident of Germany.
Maria Elena, frustrated with the Castro regime’s refusal to allow her young son to reunite with her and his father, wrote a certified letter to the Cuban ambassador in Berlin, Germany, on March 1, 2003. In it she is requesting one more time that her son be granted legal exit from Cuba. She assures the ambassador that his retention in Cuba is against natural law and is physically painful for the boy and herself.
In her letter, Maria Elena says that she has been living a quiet and anonymous existence in Germany. But – in an ultimatum to the regime – she says that her patience is reaching its limits and her behavior can change quickly if within a month after receiving the letter “your government doesn’t give me a positive written reply authorizing the exit of my son.”
This gutsy mother says, “in 2000, the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the United States in the name of ‘family reunification’ decided that Elian Gonzalez must return to Cuba with his father. But since then it has been indisputable that Fidel Castro’s government is the one who is blocking the reunification of Cuban families.
“Your government is sentencing my son to be an orphan while his parents are alive. Fortunately, I haven’t died at sea as Elisabet Broton [Elian Gonzalez’s mother] did, and I enjoy the necessary freedom to enforce my legal rights as a mother. Everyone [in Germany] knows that communist countries are huge prisons and have seen how Elian, rather than being returned to anonymity in Cardenas, his birthplace, has become in a marionette victimized by Castro’s propaganda machinery.
“The Elian case exposed the difference between communism and an open society. Today, not even the ambassadors of that regime (in continuous desertion all over the world) can deny the tyrannical nature of Cuban socialism. From now on I will defend ‘family values’ against the ‘political rights’ that your government uses as immigration guidelines.
“By obstructing the departure of my little son from Cuba, you are denying his most elementary rights to live with his mother, in freedom and to attain happiness. In the legal battle for Elian your government said that to maintain the boy in the U.S. was a violation of his father’s rights. But in this case both parents are out of Cuba, and your government said that to retain him in Cuba is the only alternative that you have to defend the revolution. Do you think that keeping a boy hostage is not going to cause reaction from his parents?
“The U.S. law ignored the wish of Elian’s mother for her son to grow up in freedom because she did not leave a written document requesting it. Isn’t this letter enough?
“I hope you notify the Cuban authorities of this letter but I repeat that if I don’t receive an adequate and positive response, my demand will become an infinite campaign against the immoral crime that makes the young sons of defecting parents hostages. Please let my son go without further scandals.”
Maria Elena Morejon is indeed a gutsy mother, considering she has other relatives still under Castro’s boot in Cuba. She is doing what Elisabet Broton, Elian’s mother, couldn’t do because she lost her life bringing her son to America and America betrayed her dying wish.
As the record shows, Castro is a family splitter. He has used and abused this technique for his selfish goals since his nefarious ascension to power in 1959. Today, Cuba is a divided nation of 11 million hostages and their 3 million relatives in exile. And thousands of children like Elian Gonzalez and Israel Peru Morejon are living proof.
