Syria Sides With Iraq

DAMASCUS, Syria -- A Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday that Damascus had chosen to side with the Iraqi people, who he said were facing an illegitimate and unjustified invasion.

Commenting on U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's warning to Syria to cease support of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein or face the consequences, the spokesman said Powell and the whole world know that "Syria chose to be with the international legitimacy represented by the United Nations and the Security Council."

The spokesman said that Powell issued his warning to Syria while "addressing the annual conference of AIPAC, the largest Zionist lobby in the United States."

On Sunday, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Sharaa said that the United States had lost politically and diplomatically because its war on Iraq wasn't backed up by U.N. resolutions. He said it had even failed to win the support of the Iraqi opposition.

Sharaa said plans to partition Iraq failed due to the unity of the Iraqi people in "confronting the U.S. invasion."
