Libya Will Follow Nuke Protocals

Libya's foreign minister says his country will cooperate with the United Nation's nuclear watchdog agency. Abdel-Rahman Shalqam said Saturday Libya will work with the International Atomic Energy Agency and sign a protocol allowing short-notice inspections of its nuclear sites.

He also said he hopes the move will encourage other nations, particularly Israel, to "dispose of their weapons of mass destruction."

Mr. Shalqam spoke in Tripoli alongside U.N. nuclear chief Mohammed ElBaradei, who said he does not believe Libya was close to producing a nuclear weapon.

Mr. ElBaradei added that his team of nuclear experts would immediately begin technical discussions with Libyan officials and would visit relevant sites. He says he hopes to get a comprehensive understanding of the extent of Libya's nuclear program during his visit.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Bush announced eight days ago that Libya had agreed in secret negotiations with the United States and Britain to abandon its program to develop atomic weapons.
