The Era of the Cornered Rat

News Item: "Top Hollywood activists and intellectuals are planning to gather this week in Beverly Hills for an event billed as 'Hate Bush,'" according to the Drudge Report.
"Laurie David [wife of "Seinfeld" creator Larry David] has sent out invites to the planned Tuesday evening meeting at the Hilton with the bold heading: 'Hate Bush 12/2 – Event," Matt Drudge reports. (Note: Mrs. David now denies her e-mail invites used the "Hate Bush 12/2" line – we'll stick with Drudge.)
And it's not just George Bush they hate.
They also hate you folks who live in the Red Zone - that majority of counties in the U.S. that voted for George Bush in 2000. To the Socialist Democrats who call themselves liberals or adopt the old Soviet designation of "progressive," you are nothing but a sorry bunch of know-nothing yahoos lurking around the flyover country trailer parks and ramshackle hovels they think you inhabit.
They turn up their noses at you because you haven't the faintest notion about the things that really matter, such as which wine goes with which food, or at what age it's appropriate to dump your spouse for a younger trophy wife.
Their burning hatred for you has been simmering just below the surface since you stole the election from Mr. Gore by senselessly voting for George W. Bush three years ago, and you can now expect it to erupt like Mt. Vesuvius, scattering the ashes of resentment all over the political landscape.
Panic is setting in among the elite. They are feeling the cold, hard winds of reality as they begin to blow through the sheltered havens of the rich and fatuous in Beverly Hills, uptown Manhattan, Martha's Vinyard, the newsrooms of the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and Lizzie Grubman's Hamptons.
The economy they thought would accommodate them by plunging into depression-era depths has suddenly soared, and every indication is that by Election Day next November it will be humming along very nicely, thank you. Their "tax cuts for the rich scam" has been exposed for the lie it is as Red Zone Americans – not just the bloated, blue-blooded super-rich like John Kerry and Howard Dean – find themselves with the extra cash the cuts have produced.
And the ever-present danger they faced from a president who they insist is stupid and rooted in the despised Red Zone mentality suddenly became real on Thanksgiving Day with his stunning and courageous act of leadership in visiting the war zone in Iraq to pay homage to the sons and daughters of Red Zonites now in harm's way as they serve their nation.
These poor fools huddled in their Manhattan condos and their Beverly Hills mansions are so far out of touch with the real America that they fail to understand that with people like George Bush, what you see is what you get.
Life-long poseurs accustomed to dissembling at the drop of a hat, they simply are incapable of recognizing an American original when they see one. If tears come to his eyes as he stands on a podium looking out at the faces of 600 young and patriotic Americans far from home and their loved ones, and facing death or dismemberment every minute of every hour of every day, they view his tears as being as false as theirs would be were they in his place – tears as phony as they are. They learn to do that sort of thing in Hollywood.
They mistakenly believe that they score points by calling Bush a "cowboy," failing in their elitist delirium to realize that when you call someone a cowboy, most Americans conjure up visions of the widely admired sort of characters played by such tall-in-the-saddle types as John Wayne, Gary Cooper and Clint Eastwood.
What they now face with horror and resentment is the very obvious fact that no matter how much money socialist billionaires such as George Soros pour into their campaign coffers, no matter how often Barbra Streisand rants and raves about what a scoundrel the president is, no matter how much hateful socialist rhetoric issues from the mouths of Teddy Kennedy, Howard Dean or Tom Daschle, or how many rigged stories the New York Times publishes attacking the administration, George Bush is coasting toward a triumphant re-election, probably carrying with him swollen majorities in the House and Senate.
As this unthinkable prospect becomes obvious to them, the cornered-rat syndrome will set in – and we can expect them to pull out all stops on their campaign organs and play the symphony of hatred that is always their last resort. And the hatred, as I said, will be aimed not only at the president but also at all of you people out there who have huge supplies of what the socialist elite lack, misunderstand and despise: common sense.
Common sense tells you that no matter what you may think about the reasons why we are in Iraq, you realize that since we are there, we have to see the thing through. Today's Americans are repelled by the notion of cut and run.
Moreover, common sense tells you that when a nation is at war, it is essential to stand behind the commander in chief, like him or not. Wartime is not an appropriate time to undercut the armed forces in order to make political points about a president you do not like, and mindlessly attacking the commander in chief undercuts the troops he commands. That's how wars are lost (remember Vietnam?).
And common sense would tell you that relying on the U.N. to take over in Iraq as the Socialist Democrats demand makes as much sense as expecting the Women's Christian Temperance Union to take on the Mafia. You don't send a spoiled child to do a man's job.
Common sense also tells you that tax cuts make more spending money available to consumers and more capital for investments that create jobs. It also tells you that there is something terribly wrong with the thinking processes of Democrats who pledge to repeal the Bush tax cuts and take all that extra spending power away from the folks in the Red Zone. Common sense tells you to stay as far away from such dunderheads as is possible.
Sitting in their privileged retreats, contemplating the glories of such heroes of socialism as Fidel Castro, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini and that great leader of Iraq's socialist Ba'athist party Saddam Hussein, America's "progressives" must be shivering in horror over the prospect of four more years under a leader who is so demented that he freely admits that he seeks divine guidance in his daily life.
And when they allow themselves to contemplate what is becoming increasingly clear – that a majority of Americans are now conservatives who will no longer support the Nationalist Socialist Democrat Party – they will enter a serious period of denial. Denial of the fact that, to paraphrase the late Charlie Dressen's comment about the Giants, "The Democrats is dead."
It will then become for them the era of the cornered rat, and you Red Zone heroes will be the target. Keep the rat traps handy. You're going to need them.
