One Reporter's Opinion : ... and NAFTA-wards?

It is this reporter's opinion that we should have listened
to Sir James Goldsmith, former member of the British
Parliament and internationally recognized economist, when
he warned us of the North American Free Trade Agreement,
better known as NAFTA, and the New World Order.
Sir James, speaking before our own Senate Commerce
Committee hearings on Nov. 15, 1994, stated that NAFTA,
GATT and the New World Order were "the most destructive
proposal presented to the American people." He based his
statement on the experience of Europe: loss of jobs,
unemployment and a host of other attendant problems.
But we wouldn't listen when NAFTA was being debated in
Congress. Some critics argued it would be bad for U.S.
workers. Others said it would hurt Mexican workers, but
these concerns were shouted down by the treaty's
proponents, who optimistically predicted that a rising tide
of profits and productivity would result.
Look at the result today – north or south – and you'll
see that the benefits of NAFTA add up to NADA! But the
globalists will not give up. Former Council on Foreign
Relations (CFR) president Winston Lord stated: "To a
certain extent we are going to have to yield some of our
sovereignty, which will be controversial at home. Under
NAFTA, some Americans are going to be hurt as low-wage jobs
are taken away."
On July 18, 1993, CFR member and trilateralist Henry
Kissinger wrote, "With NAFTA, [the] U.S. finally creates a
New World Order." Kissinger went on:
"NAFTA will represent
the most creative step toward a New World Order taken by
any group of countries since the end of the Cold War. What
Congress will have before it is not a conventional trade
agreement, but the architecture of a new international
system. The trade agreement with Mexico is the vital first
step for a new kind of community of nations, a first step
toward the New World Order."
And there you have it – in their own words: NAFTA is an
important step in the globalists' plan for a New World
Order, where national sovereignty will increasingly
diminish. My friends, they have a plan for us. It is the
end of the sovereign states.
A report by the Economic Policy Institute states,
"NAFTA eliminated 766,000 actual and potential U.S.
jobs between 1994 and 2000 because of the rapid
growth in the net U.S. export deficit with Mexico and
Canada."
You might think that the U.S. workers' loss would be the
Mexican workers' gain. Wrong!
The job picture for U.S. workers has been grim, but
NAFTA's effect on Mexican jobs has been devastating.
NAFTA's first year saw the loss of more than a
million jobs all across Mexico.
The Mexican government and our own economies are closely
tied. It is said, "When the U.S. economy catches a cold,
Mexico gets pneumonia."
After a decade under NAFTA, working people and the poor on
both sides of the border have paid a high price for trade
liberalization, while benefits have been reaped only by the
tiny clique (the elite) that promoted the treaty from the
very beginning.
Recently David Bacon, a labor journalist and author of the
forthcoming book "The Children of NAFTA," says the Bush
administration, not satisfied with the current economic
chaos under NAFTA, now hopes to establish a free-trade area
in the Americas, which would export NAFTA's principles to
Central and South America and the Caribbean.
Bush may be running into trouble on that front, however. He
has found, in dealing with the trade ministers of Brazil,
Ecuador, Argentina and Venezuela, that they are not willing
to repeat our experience with Mexico and follow NAFTA's
path to mass unemployment and poverty.
Why did we refuse to listen to the words of Sir James
Goldsmith when he warned that NAFTA would prove to be the
most destructive proposal ever presented to the American
people?
