LOS ANGELES -- In the same hotel where he celebrated his first election five years earlier, Gov. Gray Davis stood before a crowd of supporters late Tuesday and admitted defeat in only the second successful recall of a sitting governor.
"Tonight, the voters decided it's time for someone else to serve," Davis said, his words interrupted by supporters booing at his concession and chanting "We want Gray" in support.
Davis smiled and waved them off. As the chanting subsided, he said of the state's voters, "I accept their judgment."
"I have placed a call to Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger just a few minutes ago to congratulate him on being elected governor," he said.
Davis returned to the Biltmore Hotel on Tuesday as the least popular figure in modern California political history, targeted in a recall just a year into his second term.
"I've been at a lot of functions at the Biltmore where everybody is upbeat but not tonight," said Paul Bechley of the Laborers' Union.
In earlier years, crowds had swarmed the Biltmore's Crystal Room on Election Night, but on Tuesday, there was mostly silence. Reporters outnumbered Davis supporters.
"Being a Democrat, we've had a lot of successful nights here," said Bob Mulholland, state Democratic party spokesman. "This is not one of those nights.
"As the governor said, `We've had worse days in Vietnam."'
