LOS ANGELES -- California voters overwhelmingly rejected a contentious ballot initiative Tuesday that would have banned state and local governments from tracking race in everything from preschools to police work.
Proposition 54 was one of two ballot measures being decided during California's gubernatorial recall race Tuesday. Opponents have criticized it as a blow against antidiscrimination policies, while backers insist it's a leap toward a "colorblind society."
Voters decisively rejected Proposition 54, based on an exit poll survey of more than 2,800 voters conducted for The Associated Press and other news organizations by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
