Rush & Arnold, Guilty of 'R'
Christopher Ruddy
Monday, Oct. 6, 2003
By a strange alignment of the stars, Rush Limbaugh and Arnold Schwarzenegger found themselves enduring a media crucifixion this past week.

Their crime?

They both have committed the heinous act of having an “R” after their names.

What this means is simple: The liberal “mainstream” media are freed from all journalistic standards, ethics and fair play when covering them.

The Romans had a wonderful saying that for doing the same thing, some men get the cross, others get the crown.

Today, the liberal establishment media have little use for the likes of Limbaugh or Schwarzenegger and would like to see them nailed.

A liberal Democrat can be addicted to prescription drugs and we would be told to offer that person pity. Serial skirt-chasers in the Democratic Party never make it to the news.

While neither I nor NewsMax dismisses the seriousness of the allegations made against both Rush and Arnold, they are, at this point, simply unsubstantiated allegations.

I am not jumping to a conclusion about Rush or Arnold – not because they are Republicans – but because I am an American who believes in fair play. I want to hear all the facts first before making a judgment.

We hold this standard for everyone, no matter their politics or creed or race or whatever. When the Kobe Bryant story hit, NewsMax was out front saying that despite the allegations, he too should be given the benefit of the doubt. (See: Kobe Bryant's Defense.)

Usually, the media try to hold to that rule – with the exception of Republicans, like Rush and Arnold.

The major press, which rarely credits the National Enquirer’s “scoops,” delighted in its expose on Rush. The Daily News made it a Page One story in New York.

And the Los Angeles Times has made clear to the world it is nothing more than a shill for the Democratic Party. It has sought to “torpedo” Schwarzenegger’s campaign with last-minute allegations, some more than two decades old!

Frustrated that its initial “bombshell” against Arnold published last Thursday had little effect, the paper has set itself up as a sort of Internet bulletin board of Arnold allegations.

The paper reported that three women called in Friday to make new allegations, which were summarily printed in Saturday’s paper. As any journalist knows, such publication had to include the most minimal of vetting.

Since the last-minute smear had so little effect, the Times took more calls Saturday and again published more allegations in Sunday’s paper, this time from four new women.

Such behavior from the press only goes to prove that the left wing has solid control over the American media. It will even use desperate tactics to move its political agenda forward.

Fortunately, the California public is demonstrating that the American people are nobody’s fools and such tactics will be roundly rejected at the polls.
