How P.C. State Department and INS Abet Terrorists
Wes Vernon, NewsMax.com
Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002
WASHINGTON – Political correctness is killing us. The terrorist threat is pointing a dagger at the heart of America, through lax immigration policies.

A panel of investigative journalists and analysts at a panel discussion sounded that warning over the weekend. Failure to enforce the law has led to millions of illegal aliens pouring into the U.S.

Some of them are here to kill us. Some of them have formed "sleeper” cells, awaiting the right moment to strike and kill thousands, possibly millions, of Americans. Others are criminals, including murderers.

Foggy Bottom's P.C. Lunacy

At a conference of the Eagle Forum, panelist Joel Mowbray, who has done extensive investigations on this threat for National Review, charged that "the twisted minds of State Department bureaucrats” have aided and abetted a deadly policy.

Israel takes 20 to 30 minutes to interview foreign arrivals. The U.S., on the other hand, takes two to three minutes, "less time than it takes to sip a diet Coke,” he noted.

"Ideological exclusion,” not the danger to American lives, is the threat the State Department apparently considers paramount, Mowbray said.

"The State Department actually works to help terrorists enter this country,” Mowbray added, a reference to the "visa express” program, which has enabled Middle Easterners to enter the U.S. after requiring nothing more than a form issued by travel agencies.

Syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin, another panelist, flatly stated "the 19 hijackers who invaded America September 11, 2001, couldn’t have done it without help from the United States government."

'Welcome Mat' for Terrorists

"We unlocked our doors, spread out the welcome mat, and allowed these foreign visitors to plot death and destruction in the comfort of our home. And they could do it again in a heartbeat,” added the daughter of legal Philippine immigrants.

In an interview after the panel discussion, Malkin cited a comment INS Commissioner James Ziglar made in response to a NewsMax.com question several months ago, as a prime example of the immigration authorities’ "pre-September 11 mentality with regard to immigration enforcement.”

In that earlier exchange, NewsMax had submitted a written question at a National Press Club luncheon asking Ziglar if his job was complicated by Democrat and Republican reluctance to enforce curbs on illegal aliens. The INS boss’ response: "You’re not going to get me in that trap.”

Good Riddance

Malkin said that showed once again that Ziglar "is emblematic of a radical open-borders libertarian mentality that has infected unfortunately not just the left, but the right as well.” She added she was "extremely heartened” to hear that Ziglar is leaving the INS at the end of the year.

She urged that his replacement be someone "with bonafide law enforcement experience,” something that Ziglar, a former Capitol Hill bureaucrat, lacks.

Americans are overwhelmingly against illegal immigration in the abstract.

What does it take to get the voters in this country angry enough to let their elected officials know they will no longer tolerate the lax attitude on enforcement that prevails in leading political precincts? Malkin believes real-life stories may get Americans’ attention.

In her new book, "Invasion: How America Still Welcomes Terrorists, Criminals, and Other Foreign Menaces to Our Shores,” Malkin cites case after case of vicious killers who had no business being in the U.S. in the first place, ending the lives of innocent Americans. The murderers had criminal records in their countries of origin and would not have been admitted had the political establishment not looked the other way.

Malkin’s chapters "In Cold Blood” and "The Torturers Next Door” are enough to anger any American who reads the book. Two of many examples:

  • A Los Angeles police detective, while dining off-duty at a Hungarian restaurant, tried to calm a gun-wielding customer who argued with management and terrorized patrons. The intervention cost him his life.

The killer, an illegal alien from Hungary, had been arrested in his native country for robbery, blackmail, rape and theft.

  • A rookie cop and loving mother was shot to death when she tried to question two men drinking on a public sidewalk. One of the suspects, an El Salvadoran native, had illegally entered this country.

When L.A. Police Chief Daryl Gates defined the man as "an El Salvadoran drunk who doesn’t belong here,” Hispanic activists demanded that he apologize.

"Where’s Mommy?” asked the officer’s little girl asked as the coffin was carried into the church, "Are we going to see Mommy now?” No indignant activist demanded an apology for that child.

    On the Taxpayers' Dole

Steven Camarota, a resident scholar at the Center for Immigration Studies and the third member of the Eagle Forum panel, noted that in California, illegal aliens make up one third of the school, hospital and prison populations.

The least that state or federal governments can do is to avoid giving them driver's licenses and supplying them with water stations to make their arrivals more comfortable, he told his audience.

    Solutions

    Malkin argues the U.S should:

  • Guard the front door – through a targeted visa moratorium, scrapping visa-free travel, and beefing up seaports and airports.

  • Stop the revolving door – by ending deportation delays, expanding the capacity of military bases to hold illegals awaiting deportation, and ending "catch and release” games.

  • Lock the border – by militarizing the borders, slowing down on asylum, pulling up the welcome mat that encourages foreigners to thumb their noses at us and break our laws, cleaning house at INS, and and protecting our birthright, i.e., making it clear that entering this country is a privilege, not a right.
