Florida to Reno: No Recount

Janet Reno’s request for a statewide recount of votes from Tuesday’s primary got a fast no from Secretary of State Jim Smith Friday.
But the news wasn’t all bad for the former Clinton administration Attorney General – Smith said that counties could continue to search for any uncounted votes and submit any they find for final certification next week, according to the Associated Press (AP).
"Whatever those totals are at that time, will, at that time, determine who the winner of the gubernatorial primary is," Smith said.
Reno has complained that there were discrepancies in at least 80 Miami-Dade County precincts and elsewhere.
An AP computer analysis using Reno's list of questionable precincts and factoring in Miami-Dade's voter turnout of 32.7 percent, showed that up to 8,000 votes could have been missed. Reno won about 70 percent of the Miami-Dade vote, thus she could presumably pick up enough votes in that county alone to dramatically close the gap with McBride, the AP speculated.
Because the final unofficial tally showed that Bill McBride won by a margin of 8,196 votes, that number of missed votes could at the very least trigger an automatic recount if they were cast for Reno.
According to the AP, in one precinct, computers showed 900 percent more votes than there were eligible voters. In several other precincts with thousands of voters, no votes were recorded.
In neighboring Broward County, which also went heavily for Reno, AP reported that officials were auditing results from one precinct that showed 0 percent turnout among more than 800 registered voters. Reno has asked officials in Broward to review as many as 200 precincts.
She said she would only concede after the review process had run its course.
"My whole purpose is to get the votes counted and to let the votes speak — not Janet Reno speak — but let the votes speak," she said. "That's what the democratic process is all about."
