Iran-Bound Ship Seized

JERUSALEM -- German customs officials seized a private Israeli ship carrying military equipment thought to be headed for Iran, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday.

In a statement, Israel's Defense Ministry confirmed the vessel had been seized in Hamburg and the cargo included some 3,000 Israeli-made rubber treads for armored personnel carriers.

The shipment was allowed to leave Israel on the understanding the cargo was bound for Thailand, the statement said. The cargo ship, with a crew made up of Israelis and foreigners, had been docking for several days at the Hamburg port.

"The shipment sent by a private company from Israel to Germany was seized by the German customs authorities," the statement said.

Israel prohibits military exports of any kind to Iran, and the ministry said the matter had been turned over the Israeli police.

Channel Two television quoted German authorities as saying that a German company bought the equipment and that it intended to ship the cargo to Iran.

A spokeswoman for the ministry said the Israeli company, P.A.D., may not have been aware of the cargo's true destination, the BBC reported.

Avihai Weinstein, who is related to Eli Cohen, owns the company. Three years ago, Cohen was suspected of trying to sell tank engines to Iran, Channel One reported. Cohen was never indicted, but the Defense Ministry suspended contacts with his company and canceled his permit to export military equipment.
