BROOKFIELD, Wis. World War II veteran David Toy has won another battle.
The 78-year-old Wauwatosa dentist Wednesday night won the right to fly American flags on mailboxes at Brookfield Lakes Condominiums. The board reversed its order for him to take down a dozen small flags they said violated condo rules.
Toy began putting the American flags on mailboxes at the 98-unit development after Sept. 11 to mourn the victims of the attacks and support those fighting against terrorism.
"The flag of the United States is my flag," he told reporters after addressing the closed condo board meeting while wearing his World War II Army uniform and accompanied by his son, a member of the Wisconsin National Guard.
The vote to permit residents to place small flags above their mailboxes was unanimous.
"It's our flag, it's our country's flag, and I appreciate everything that I got from this country," said an emotional Toy. "I was willing to fight for it because it's my country."
Before the vote Toy had offered a truce. He said he would be willing to remove the small flags if the association erected a "decent"-size American flag.
