THE LEFT COAST REPORT
A Political Look at Hollywood

Susan Sarandon and longtime partner Tim Robbins were in Scotland recently. It seems they're both appearing in a play about the attacks of Sept. 11.

While speaking to the press about their roles in the production, somehow they got the notion it would be a good time to bash the U.S. and the war on terror.

Ananova reports that Sarandon offered a geopolitical analysis. "First you have to ask the right questions, and we haven't formed the right questions on what's going on in the world right now."

The actress also gave her perspective on the post-Sept. 11 American attitude. She told a Scottish newspaper, "In about the third week, a cut-out of John Wayne showed up and a jingoist kind of thing started taking over, and nobody could ask questions anymore."

The seldom-restrained celebrity activist said that one of the constructive things about the attacks was how they gave our nation something in common with countries that have had terrorism committed against them.

She claimed that she told her kids they have "joined the rest of the world now."

But the real clincher was when Sarandon uttered the words: "You're so lucky in Ireland, England and Spain. Everyone there already knows what it's like to have inexplicable terrorist violence."

The Left Coast Report wonders if next Sarandon will suggest that for really good fortune, the U.S. might try engaging in some agonizing famine, wretched poverty and an incurable disease or two.

Leo the Lyin' Hearted

Leonardo DiCaprio recently urged President Bush to attend the Earth Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The international gathering of enviro-fascists is just about to begin.

DiCaprio spoke at a rally organized by Global Green USA, an affiliate of Green Cross International. The founder and president of the Green Cross, incidentally, is none other than ex-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

So far Bush hasn't sent his RSVP, but DiCaprio is still trying to persuade the president to go. The actor is crying about the rejection of the Kyoto Protocol and muttering that "we are the biggest economy and the biggest polluter."

The Left Coast Report knows that if Leo ever did his homework, he'd find out that more than anything the folks behind the Summit want to sink American liberty and sovereignty like the Titanic.

Ham on the Run

A pig that escaped from a Scottish slaughterhouse is quickly becoming famous. Two British TV stars and a couple of animal protection groups are taking up its cause.

The pig has been nicknamed "McQueen," after actor Steve McQueen's famous getaway scene in the 1963 film "The Great Escape." It was last seen just northwest of Edinburgh.

Martin Shaw and Jenny Seagrove have offered to buy the little swine's freedom for twice its market value. The actors, along with the animal rights groups, are appealing to the public to rescue the creature.

The Left Coast Report hears that McQueen is headed to D.C. because U.S. politicians always welcome pork.

Moore Stupid Cartoons

Designated hitter of the far left Michael Moore always seems to be looking for a way to bring in corporate checks.

According to Variety, his latest idea is a cartoon that supposedly will be similar in tone to his best-selling book "Stupid White Men."

Maybe it's because France loves Jerry Lewis and socialism so much, but word has it that the financing for the cartoon project will come from a French producer.

The agenda-driven creation will have a pre-2004 presidential election release.

Moore first gained fame for his documentary "Roger and Me," which grossed more than 7 million corporate dollars. Most recently, he signed with the Time Warner Publishing Group for 3 million capitalist dollars.

Based on his past work, the Left Coast Report thinks Moore has found the perfect means of self-expression - a cartoon where fact, reason and depth don't matter and the message is a joke.

Gwyneth's New Bi-Line

Gwyneth Paltrow always seemed to project an air of sophistication that was reminiscent of elegant stars of the past.

But now the actress appears to be going through a major image reversal.

Paltrow has taken a role in a Miramax film called "Passion." The script requires that she engage in some explicit sex scenes that involve two women, according to Jeannette Walls of MSNBC. When Paltrow was asked whether she'd like to become a lesbian icon, she responded, "I love the thought - why not?"

Many in the industry are wondering whether her career will go up or down as a result of her flip remark.

The Left Coast Report suspects it may just go both ways.

P. Diddy, Pollster

Polls seem to be a part of life these days. But is the public ready to read a different poll each week put out by a rapper's polling firm?

We're about to find out. Rapper Sean "P. Diddy" Combs is entering the polling business with a company called Blue Mindset. The company indicates that it will focus on residents of urban America.

Initial polls have measured public opinion on the nation's economy and people's attitudes about Sept. 11.

The Left Coast Report is tracking the story that CNN pollster Bill Schneider may be planning to release a hip-hop CD entitled "The Big B.S."

Bionic Retrofit

When Hollywood scores with a movie or TV program, a sequel inevitably follows. So no one's really surprised to see themes and shows of the past reappearing on the big and little screen.

Apparently, the USA cable network has another one for us. It's working on a remake of the 1976 hit show "The Bionic Woman."

The original show began as the female answer to the "Six Million Dollar Man." Teacher Jaime Sommers was a secret cyborg crime fighter who worked for the government. Parts of her body had been replaced with artificial "bionic" ones.

It's not yet known whether political correctness will play a part in coloring the scripts of the contemporary version of the show.

The Left Coast Report notes that rumors of Cher getting the lead role are yet to be confirmed.
