Leftist Media's 'Plan to Slam Bush, GOP'
Chuck Noe, NewsMax.com
Saturday, April 27, 2002
The media establishment keeps trying to deny its blatant left-wing bias, but those pesky facts keep getting in the way. Two new examples offer even more proof of this reality.

Effort at CNN to Attack the President

"Oops! The secret's out on plan to slam Bush, GOP,” says the headline in next week’s edition of the ever-fascinating Washington Whispers section of U.S. News & World Report.

"Top Democrats, liberal interest groups, and two CNN co-hosts are quietly promoting a new network to thwart President Bush's agenda with orchestrated protests, critical stories planted in friendly media, and rapid-reaction teams,” the magazine says.

"The lefties held an inaugural meeting this month, featuring talks by House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, CNN Crossfire hosts and party operatives James Carville and Paul Begala, and former top Clinton-Gore aides.”

This new network is not a TV network – the "liberals" already have plenty of those – but a so-called "Progressive Donor Network."

This group includes an associated organization dubbing itself "American Family Voices,” which has tried to disrupt White House events with protests about Enron Corp. Sadly for these partisans, Enron has backfired, with Democrats unable to show President Bush had intervened for the bankrupt energy company, even as evidence mounts of the Clinton-Gore administration’s Enron scandal, despite the best efforts of the mainstream media to slant the story.

The scheme, says U.S. News, is the "brainchild” of left-wing publicity strategist Michael Lux, a former aide to Bill Clinton. "Lux hoped to keep his handiwork secret but said, ‘I always assume if I hand out anything to any group that it will be in a reporter's hands within ... days.’"

It’s no wonder that conservatives, libertarians and independents refer to CNN as Clinton News Network or Communist News Network. Even with Bush-hating, Christian-bashing founder Ted Turner put out to pasture, CNN continues its partisan attacks. And it just can't figure out why its ratings continue to decline.

Whether this motley crew of "progressives” will have much success is doubtful.

  • Gephardt is becoming the butt of jokes as he gears up for yet another doomed effort to wrest the Democrats’ presidential nomination.

  • The beady-eyed Carville is widely dismissed as one of the most mean-spirited attack dogs in recent U.S. political history.

  • And the hapless Begala is best known as the prissy buffoon hilariously portrayed by Chris Kattan on "Saturday Night Live.”

New York Times, CBS, NBC, Disney,
    AOL, Time Fund Leftist Group

If CNN does fail on that front, the leftist media establishment has another angle. The radical group that calls itself People for the American Way has received funding from the New York Times Co., Time Inc., CBS, NBC, Disney (parent company of ABC) and America Online, National Review reported Friday.

"It appears that the media corporations, some of which operate their own charitable foundations, did not make direct contributions to People for the American Way, but instead purchased tables — for $500 to $600 per seat — at the group's annual fundraising dinners in New York City,” says the magazine.

The laughably misnamed People for the American Way has, among other things, "spearheaded some of the most intensely partisan attacks on President Bush's judicial nominees.”

And here’s how these media powers explain themselves:

  • A spokesman for Time admits the media giant has contributed to PAW as recently as late 2000 but says the company has now reformed.

"We determined that for news organizations such as ours, it would not be appropriate for us to do that, so we stopped doing it," spokesman Peter Costiglio told National Review. "We made a determination that this was not something we should support on a regular basis."

However, there was no explanation about why, if these payments were not "appropriate,” Time had made them in the past.

  • CBS has close ties with left-wing TV producer Norman Lear, who founded PAW in 1981 and who made the network plenty of money with such conservative-bashing programs as "All in the Family” and "Maude.” "We love Norman dearly," said network executive vice president Marty Franks.

National Review pointed out that Franks had "served in top positions with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee” and leftist Sen. Patrick "Leaky” Leahy, D-Vt.

Franks said CBS sometimes disagreed with Lear and PAW "over issues affecting the entertainment industry” and bought tickets to the 2000 dinner because it was honoring Jack Valenti, head of the Motion Picture Association of America.

  • A spokesman for the New York Times admitted the company’s foundation bought tables at PAW fundraisers in 1998, 2000 and 2001.

The 1998 dinner, honoring Times chairman emeritus Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Sr., "was also something of a celebration of First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose husband was at the time trying unsuccessfully to fend off impeachment in the Monica Lewinsky matter,” says National Review. The Associated Press reported: "Several hundred admirers in formal wear cheered when the first lady arrived at their cocktail hour. The audience was obviously enamored of Mrs. Clinton."

Meanwhile, the thought police at PAW continue to act in a most un-American way. The group helped torpedo the nomination of Charles Pickering to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, though even Democrats in his home state of Mississippi testified that he was an honorable, decent man and a fair judge. Ralph Neas, fascist-in-chief at PAW, has referred to appeals-court nominee Miguel Estrada as a "Latino Clarence Thomas" and vows another nasty smear campaign.

National Review says Time Inc.’s decision to stop funding the organization appears to be "the exception, rather than the rule, concerning media support of People for the American Way.” This support does have a positive aspect, for the media establishment cannot keep denying its left-wing bias.
