#1 Explosions Rock New York

Late on Thursday, several explosions scared the heck of New Yorkers working on Wall Street.

Upon hearing the explosions late in the day, some workers quickly evacuated their offices. Calls were made to offices across Manhattan, with friends asking, "What's going on?"

No one had any answers. More explosions hit the 40s. Fire sirens could be heard screeching as emergency trucks headed downtown.

Another attack? No. It turns out there were explosions underground that caused manhole covers to "pop" the city.

The cause of the explosions had to do with electrical transformers under the city's roads. This week, the city was hit by an unusual heat wave. Buildings quickly turned on their air-conditioners, a situation Con Ed was totally unprepared for.

The situation, however, demonstrated just how nervous New Yorkers remain after 9-11.

#2 Chavez No 'Democrat'

We're surprised how many conservatives and right leaning pundits are criticizing U.S. policy that gave a benign look at the recent coup attempt in Venezuela. Some, like the Wall Street Journal's Paul Gigot, note that President Chavez was democratically elected and have scolded the Bush administration for interfering.

Though there is scant evidence (sadly!) linking the U.S. to the recent coup attempt, it is true that some in the Bush administration were quietly cheering the coup plotters on.

It is also true that Chavez has little use for democracy. Chavez has trampled on Venezuela's Congress, Judiciary and Constitution. A budding dictator, he had embraced Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein. He says he wants to follow Castro's communist model.

So he did, when his cronies, mostly members of urban left-wing guerilla groups he has been arming to counter the army, as well as armed Cuban agents, began firing on innocent protesters in Caracas, killing a dozen people.

Where is it written that democratically elected leaders may legally allow their goons to murder innocent citizens?

We also note that Hitler was democratically elected. He had a similar contempt, as does Chavez, to democratic accountability. If Chavez succeeds because of American hand-ringing, rest assured, Colombia, Panama, and Brazil could well become anti-American regimes.

#3 Beat Up on the Catholic Church

Catholic bashing is in vogue.

Some in the media couldn't resist taking a pot shot at the Catholic Church in the current Robert Blake scandal.

When news broke this week that Blake had been arrested by the LAPD for the murder of his wife, Reuters.com ran the story with a photo of Blake dressed as a priest and handcuffed. The photo was from the movie Blake starred in called "Hell Town." Now that was a low blow.

#4 "Cuba in Revolution" Sending Shock Waves

Ninety miles from our southern border, one of the world's wealthiest men (worth $1.4 billion according to Forbes magazine) lives like a king, while his subjects, the Cuban people, live in abject poverty, facing chronic shortages of even the most basic commodities such as food, medicine, clothing and housing, writes Miguel A. Faria, Jr., M.D. in his newly released book, "Cuba in Revolution -- Escape From a Lost Paradise."

Fidel Castro, the longest-ruling Marxist dictator in history, runs an island prison without an exit, a brutal, repressive police state where individual rights are non-existent. More than 100,000 Cubans have perished under communism (fascism) and more than 500,000 jailed. More than one-sixth of the population - two million people - has fled the island, with three-fourths leaving by sea perishing. Child abuse, political incarcerations, torture and murder are rampant, as Faria points out and documents in his book.

The Cuban version of Big Brother, the thought police or DGI, commits unspeakable torture both in the Havana Psychiatric Hospital and in Cuba's prisons.

Few books can fill the reader with an overwhelming sense of emotion that comes from firsthand experience - Alexandr Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago," Armando Valladares' "Against all Hope," and now Miguel Faria¹s "Cuba in Revolution" joins the list.

Former president Jimmy Carter is visiting Cuba and dictator Fidel Castro, and many powerful individuals and institutions are working behind the scenes inexorably to re-establish normal relations with the communist regime.

"Cuba in Revolution - Escape From a Lost Paradise" is $26.95 (add $3 S&H).

#5 McCain for President

Last year NewsMax Magazine published a cover story of the "Democrat's Dream Ticket" - a 2004 presidential ticket of Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

The cover received some snickers, one from McCain himself who was asked about it by Tim Russert on "Meet the Press."

McCain, deftly, did not rule out such a run as a Democrat and possibly with Hillary.

Now, the New Republic says McCain would not only be a great dream candidate for the Democrats, he would be their "presumptive front-runner."

The media hype for McCain may also be a function of the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Neo-conservatives that set editorial policy at publications like the New Republic, Weekly Standard and National Review, are not happy with the Bush administration's policies of criticizing Israel and Sharon in the wake of the terrorist suicide bombings. McCain has been ardently pro-Israel, and close to the neo-cons.

The media buzz for McCain may be a not-so-subtle message to the White House: go tough on Israel and we'll back McCain.

If you would like to read the original NewsMax Magazine story, "Hillary and McCain: The Democrat Dream Ticket," as well as other facts about Hillary's plans for the White House, it's available in our new report.
