#1 Plagiarism Fallout
You may have noticed the spate of stories about celebrity authors like Doris
Kearns Goodwin and Stephen Ambrose.
Both have been accused of extensive acts of plagiarism. Both have gotten wrist
slaps from the major media.
The authors have stated they were "sloppy not sneaky" in not properly
attributing their source material - much of which they used verbatim.
But here's the real story why the plagiarism issue likely won't affect these and
other well-known authors.
The fact is that most celebrity authors don't write their books.
As one expert has noted, once a publisher finds a best-selling author, the
author becomes a "sausage-making machine."
Busy with speeches and appearances, the authors have little time to research and
write. That work falls to full-time researchers and ghostwriters.
Sure, the author may give his or her team direction and review the final
manuscript.
But the authors need to keep the façade they indeed are writing their own books.
This is why they cannot admit, at any time, that they employ others to write
their books. They are literally in a catch-22.
Most of the major media know the reason, but they won't report that a $25/hour
ghostwriter was the real culprit in the plagiarism, because most of the
celebrity authors are their friends, or a media giant whose tentacles go far and
wide publishes the books.
#2 Hillary Keeping Gore Out
Hillary's presidential run is well underway. Today, she and her husband are the
mega-stars of the Democratic Party and can raise the big bucks that can put the
party back into the White House.
Hillary also controls the Democratic Party machinery. Her handpicked man, Terry
McAuliffe, heads the party.
Meanwhile we hear that Al Gore has had a difficult time raising money - and is
hard pressed to squirrel together 200 people for a $25 a plate dinner in Iowa.
Former big donors to Gore from New York and Hollywood have been quietly informed
by Hillary allies to keep their powder dry, not to join the Gore camp, because
there may be a mystery candidate announcing a run. Guess who?
#3 McCain and Third Party Madness
For those Republicans who think Pres. Bush is a shoe-in to win in 2004, think
again.
The scuttlebutt in Washington is that the Democrats are already seeking to
promote one or more Republicans who could run as a kamikaze candidacy a la Ross
Perot in '92 and '96, or like Ralph Nader in 2002. Nader, some Democrats
believe, stole the election for Gore.
One candidate is John McCain. But McCain has so squarely identified himself with
the liberal wing of the Republican Party - who may actually steal votes from the
Democrats. Congressman John Anderson had that effect in 1980 when he ran against
Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter.
Don't be surprised if a wealthy Republican flashes up over the horizon - one
like Perot who can appeal to conservative voters. As Perot and Nader showed,
even a small percentage of the vote can turn the election.
#4 FBI Agent Whistleblower
NewsMax reported last week that an FBI agent is set to go public that 9-11 could
have been prevented - had Bureau officials not interfered with FBI
investigations.
Suddenly, the press conference scheduled for last Wednesday was called off.
We hear the reason is that a major media outlet has agreed to cover the FBI
agents allegations and needed more time before they came out with their
exclusive.
#5 New York Going Bust?
Despite all the talk that New York City is making a big comeback in the wake of
9-11, the facts don't show it.
Last week Crain's New York Business headlined: "Going, Going, Gone: Bankruptcies
soar among entrepreneurs from retailers to restaurateurs as recession, creditors
cause implosions; some can't even muster formal filings."
The paper reports that bankruptcy filings soared 57% last year, with 1,236
companies taking the last measure.
But the numbers don't reflect how bad the situation is. Crain's says many
businesses can't afford the bankruptcy option.
And the once hot Manhattan real estate market shows signs of serious erosion.
Despite the fact the World Trade Center collapse lost the city equivalent of
square footage of downtown Dallas, companies seeking to find new space are
apparently not looking in Manhattan.
Just over a year ago, building owners could name their price, with $70 a square
foot rents not unusual for A buildings.
But now, ads for commercial space proliferate -- one even appeared in the New
York Post.
Another real estate firm is offering a "Maximum Reward." If you lease 100,000
square feet from their building at 450 West 33rd Street, the company will
provide you with use of a jet for 25 hours for each floor you rent.
Perhaps the jet may prove useful if you decide you need to evacuate from the
city.
#6 NewsMax Promoted Books Hit NY Times Best-seller Lists
Last week NewsMax reported that "Shakedown: Exposing the Real Jesse Jackson" had
hit #4 on the New York Times bestseller list.
NewsMax has been the leading media agency promoting this explosive new book.
Now another book that NewsMax has been actively covering has hit the NY Times
bestseller list.
That book is Dr. Weiss's Wall Street Tell-All "The Ultimate Safe Money Guide."
This week "The Ultimate Safe Money Guide" hit #6 on The New York Times hardcover
business list, #10 on the Wall Street Journal's business list, and #1 among
Amazon's best-selling business and investment books list.
Weiss was the first analyst to warn about the Enron debacle - and in his new
book, he names names of other major companies that investors need to be wary of.
In case you missed these books, you can get them at a steep discount from the
