European Union Funds Abortion over Education

The Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute reports that Irish taxes might be used to promote and provide abortion in developing countries, even though abortion is unconstitutional in Ireland.

According to a member of the Irish parliament Dana Rosemary Scallon, Connacht/Ulster MEP, the Irish government can no longer remain silent on this matter. Irish tax money will fund an EU program which will compel abortion, without debate, in the poorest countries. According to Scallon, the Irish people should have the right to decide this matter in agreement with their conscience and their constitution.

Scallon refers to the Sandbaek report, which directs that the European community shall supply financial assistance to endorse reproductive and sexual rights in developing countries. EU spending for reproductive services would rise at least 72 percent and even as much as 300 percent, even though total EU international aid will only increase about 1 or 2 percent.

In fact, to accommodate increased spending on reproductive services, the EU may be forced to eliminate funding for elementary education in the developing world.

Scallon sees the report as an attack on the sovereignty of Ireland. An EU regulation is directly applicable and obligatory in all of the EU member states without any need for national involvement or even national debate. Essentially, she says that Irish tax money can be used for abortions regardless of Ireland's laws concerning unborn human life.
