One Reporter's Opinion: G.N.O.M.E.S.
George Putnam

It is this reporter's opinion that with the threat of war, international and national terrorism, and utter confusion in this
world, we are nonetheless conducting an insane form of "business as usual." This week's column will, therefore, be a
slight departure from the norm. I'd like to remind you of the goings-on of those who would see fit to control our
interests.
First of all ... hot on the heels of North Korea's brazen announcement of nuclear capability comes the report that a Balkan
firm is supplying Iraq with weapons of war.

U.S. officials discovered that Yugoslavia and Bosnia are exporting military equipment to Saddam Hussein. We know that the
"axis of evil" is doing business, but the shocker comes when we learn that our ally Pakistan has been feeding North Korea
assistance on its nuclear program.
As our president meets with Russian and Chinese leaders and breaks bread with them at his ranch in Texas, we witness those
two nations as trading partners. Russia has a $40 billion economic deal with Iraq. China trades with everyone. Wall
Street reports that international big money investments now go to the communist Chinese rather than to the U.S.

We know that Syria and Jordan received their oil from Iraq. We also know that Iran, Pakistan, Syria and Saudi Arabia
provide safe haven to al-Qaeda. Everyone's trading behind the scenes. It's the interdependency that's killing us.
… and in the midst of all this, we learn that the Bush administration has unilaterally broken our peace treaty with
Japan. In a giveaway of the southern Sakhalin Island to the Russians, this without the consent of 46 signatories of the
treaty ending WWII, its oil and fishery rights, my friends – billions of dollars of oil – the big oil companies and the
Russian kleptocrats get everything. We get nothing.

... and speaking of business deals, don't forget the screwing we got on the Panama Canal with the Communist Chinese controlling both ends.

... and how about this for dealing behind the scenes: The specter of a U.S. attack on Iraq has Russian officials concerned
about that nation's oil contracts with Saddam Hussein. There's actual talk that a Russian-led coup might be the only way
to protect Moscow's interests. The Russians fear that in the event of the overthrow of Saddam by U.S. forces, Iraq's oil
contracts with the U.S. would take priority over those of Russia, France and other countries.

... and, with it all, the poppies continue to grow between our crosses, row on row in Afghanistan.
As we look at the sad picture and examine the trading partners, it all adds up to international greed.
It's business as usual with these people, who are like a fabled race of dwarflike creatures who live underground and guard treasure hoards:
Greed fuels their want for
Narcotics,
Oil and
Money ... and ends up leaving
Everyone
Short.
