BRUSSELS, Belgium -- NATO decided Wednesday to send a contingent of troops to protect international monitors who will oversee the implementation of a peace plan in Macedonia, Secretary General Lord George Robertson announced in Brussels.
The mission, dubbed "Operation Amber Fox," will be led by Germany and involve less than 3,500 troops, he said.
NATO's political arm, the North Atlantic Council, approved an operational plan for Amber Fox early Wednesday during an informal meeting of NATO defense ministers.
The exact size of the Amber Fox force and the length of its mission was still being determined.
A sporadic civil war between Macedonia's democratically elected Serb government and ethnic Albanians is threatening the country. On NATO Tuesday completed a 30-day mission to collect more than 3,300 weapons from rebel forces.
