Lawyer: Condit Will Do 'Whatever' Necessary

WASHINGTON - Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., will allow police access to his apartment, offer phone records and make his staff available to investigators searching for missing intern Chandra Levy, his lawyer said Monday.

Attorney Abbe Lowell said that "the congressmen and Mrs. Condit have been cooperative" throughout the investigation, and have offered their full cooperation with authorities.

"The congressman will provide whatever additional information or material he can to police," Lowell said.

But when asked by reporters if Condit would be willing to submit himself to a lie detector test, Lowell said it has not been an issue yet, though he would be open to discussing it with the police.

Condit told police Friday he had a sexual relationship with Levy, police sources said. It was the third time police had questioned Condit. Aides had, until then, vehemently denied any sexual relationship between Condit and Levy. Condit had delayed previous questioning sessions with police.

Condit's attorney said he and the congressman were open to any requests by police for their assistance, offering to turn over telephone records or allow access to the congressman's apartment if the police ask for them.

"I hope any and all of this will be useful in finding Chandra Levy," said Lowell.

Lowell insisted his client was not a suspect in the disappearance of Levy, who went missing some nine weeks ago.

"Surely the time has come to focus less on Rep. Condit and more on the 99 other people police have identified who might be as helpful in providing information that could find Chandra," he said.

Lowell pleaded with the media to stop staking out Condit's home and family.
